The project to bring Nottinghamshire’s first Community Diagnostic Centre to (CDC) to Mansfield has celebrated delivering over 50,000 health checks and tests to local people - even before the first brick has been laid for the new purpose-built facility. Since October 2023, the Mansfield CDC, which is run by Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, has been reducing waiting times for a number of diagnostic tests by offering hundreds of tests each week. The tests include blood tests, heart scans, MRI scans and ultrasound scans that are being offered as part of the project before the new purpose-built facility is eventually built alongside Mansfield Community Hospital in Stockwell Gate. Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust reposted this
The pioneering partnership between the college, Nottingham Trent University and Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to provide local people with a gateway to careers in the NHS goes from strength to strength. That is the message from leaders at the three organisations following a visit by the hospital trust’s acting chief executive Dr David Selwyn and acting chair Graham Ward to the college and to NTU’s healthcare training centre. Dr Selwyn and Mr Ward were given a tour of our Derby Road and Chesterfield Road campuses by principal and chief executive Andrew Cropley to see the state-of-the-art facilities that equip students to work in the health and care sectors. They also visited NTU’s Centre for Health and Allied Professions where undergraduates are training to become the healthcare professionals of tomorrow. Read more 👉 https://lnkd.in/eAYuEMqp

Last week we welcomed representatives from Nottinghamshire County Council’s public rights of way team, who presented colleagues in our Physiotherapy team with 28 Fitbits which are suitable to use when walking, cycling, and swimming. The Fitbits will be loaned out to patients undergoing rehabilitation after a stay in the Critical Care Unit, or those recovering from strokes, and will be offered to patients undergoing physiotherapy at the Trust’s King’s Mill Hospital, Mansfield Community Hospital and Newark Hospital sites. Debs Kerry, Physiotherapist and Improvement Fellow at the Trust said, “Sherwood Forest Hospitals is driven to promote active travel both in the prevention and recovery of ill health for our patients and staff. We know that regular exercise can significantly reduce the occurrence of illnesses such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes & depression and a reduction in vehicle emissions will reduce local incidences of respiratory diseases. This generous donation will allow us to deliver more social prescribing and allow our local community to take greater control of their own health and wellbeing". The Nottinghamshire public rights of way team aim to promote sustainable modes of travel to members of the community to grow the economy, promote health and air quality, and change behaviours in travel. Various ‘health walks’ throughout the county are available at: https://lnkd.in/dD2cAP_A Thank you, Nottinghamshire County Council for your generous donation.

A community event to support patients under the care of the NHS with their health and wellbeing took place recently at Kirby Leisure Centre. The event was attended by over 150 people who are currently under the care of the NHS for musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions, which affect bones, joints or muscles. MSK conditions can significantly impact people’s quality of life and ability to work and socialise, often existing with other health problems like obesity, chronic pain, depression, and physical inactivity. The purpose of the event was to help those people access the wide range of help and support services available to them within the local area. Connecting people with local support networks empowers them to proactively manage their health whilst they are waiting for the next step in their treatment journey. Several local community services were in attendance to offer support to those with MSK conditions to live well and these included Disability Nottinghamshire, ATTFE, Ashfield Voluntary Action, Newark and Sherwood CVS, Citizens Advice, East Midlands Chamber and Your Home Care. Local resident Darren Miller, 61, has osteoarthritis and attended the event after receiving an invitation. He found it helped him to understand and manage his condition. He said: “I found today incredibly useful. I didn’t know what to expect and was a bit cynical and wondered how it was going to help. “Having an informal talk with a physio has been informative, incredibly beneficial and has put my mind at rest.”

A great initiative in our local community, which enables patients to take control of their own health and wellbeing.
In this months' Health Estate Journal, Alasdair Ben Dixon reflects on the role and value of the architect in designing successful social prescribing hubs. This summer, Ashfield Community Hub opened in Kirkby, Nottinghamshire, providing an accessible space for community groups and social prescribing link workers to operate our of. It was one of the final projects in an NHS Property Services Ltd pilot of 100 social prescribing projects Reusing a former canteen in the Ashfield Health Centre we engaged with stakeholders and service providers from the outset and designed with specific users in mind. Creating a welcoming space where people would feel comfortable was an important factor for the long term success of the project. Read more about the engagement and how it shaped how the community hub looks and feels, to support the important services offered there. https://lnkd.in/e6zuYgb4

Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust are pleased to announce positive scores in the recently published CQC 2023 Adult Inpatients Survey. The survey, which took place between January and April 2024, covers over 100 NHS acute and specialist trusts. Scores revealed that Sherwood was in the top 20% range for 22 of the questions asked in the survey, which covered several areas that patients encounter during the hospital experience. The Trust scored extremely well in areas relating to patients getting enough to drink, being given enough privacy, dignity and respect, and cleanliness of the wards. Many positive comments were received as part of the survey, examples of which include: “Excellent care and attention” “I can’t fault anything whatsoever, it was perfect” Gathering consistent feedback from our patients, carers, families, and local community allows us to learn, develop and improve the patient experience - thank you to all those who took the time to contribute to this survey.

We’re working hard to improve the working experience of all our colleagues to ensure we attract and retain the very best people. After becoming a People Promises Exemplar Organisation as sponsored by NHS England in January 2024, we appointed Leanne Featherstone as People Promise Manager to bring the NHS People Promise to life at SFH. Since her appointment in April 2024, Leanne has made headway on a wide range of initiatives linked to the Trust’s strategy, the overall focus of which is to: ‘improve the lives of our patients, our people and our local population.’ On Wednesday, we welcomed a team from NHS England who came to see some of the innovative initiatives around retention that we're leading on. They spent time meeting teams and hearing about the great work happening across our hospitals. It was fantastic to have the chance to showcase the work we have achieved so far and talk about our next steps. They particularly liked the work we're doing around violence and aggression. Leanne said: “While the Trust consistently receive excellence results for the annual staff survey, there are always areas that we need to give more focus to, and we continue to work with colleagues to ensure that they are happy and content in their work.” You can find out more about the work Leanne has achieved so far here: https://bit.ly/47UT2nK

Patients who have cataracts are set to benefit from a new one-stop clinic based at Ashfield Health Village in Kirkby-in-Ashfield, which will reduce the need for multiple hospital visits ahead of surgery. Referrals to the service can be done via your optometrist or GP, and operations will continue to take place at either King’s Mill Hospital or Newark Hospital. The official opening of the clinic on Monday 30 September was attended by Trustees from the League of Friends (Mansfield and Sutton) who generously donated £58,844 to buy specialist equipment for the clinic. You can find out more about how this new service will benefit patients here: https://bit.ly/4eoKqbh
