KINGDOM OF SPIRITS Words: Marco Barneveld Photography: Rene Koster Location: Greenland The schooner Opal sailed from Constable Pynt, Greenland, through Hurry Fjord in the direction of Ittoqqortoormiit. Aboard Opal were Captain Heimir Harðarson, travel writer Marco Barneveld, and photographer René Koster. Their goal during this brief Arctic summer: to explore Scoresbysund, a fjord system 350 kilometers (217 miles) long, accessible for only three months of the year. From October to June the sea froze. A version of this story was first published in Sidetracked Volume 7, and is now in our book Voyages - Sidetracked Beyond, published with gestalten https://lnkd.in/g3jE-R2p

Day Zero - Running on Dry I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was like something out of a movie. Imagine a scene from a Mad Max film or something like it. Where previously there had been a mass expanse of water – one of the biggest dams in the Western Cape Province of South Africa and the chief water source of Cape Town – there was now a desert. FOREVER DREAMING Words & Photography: James Bowden Location: Iceland Adventure photographer and surfer James Bowden was in northwest Iceland for a shoot, and five long days had flashed by. He stayed behind with a skeleton crew consisting of Noah Lane, an Australian sponsored surfer based in western Ireland; Tina Bingham, professional model and surfer from Japan; Chris McClean, visionary filmmaker and lover of cold waves; and David Gray, creative director at Finisterre and the man who had put their current plan into motion. The plan: a surf adventure to Hornstrandir, the unpopulated and hard-to-access nature reserve in far northwest Iceland. Forever Dreaming is featured in Voyages - Sidetracked Beyond, published by gestalten Words and photography James Bowden https://lnkd.in/g3jE-R2p

THE SHINING WALL It began with a phone call from Scott. ‘Dude,’ he said, ‘you gotta get down to Zion. Like now. There’s way more ice than anyone thinks.’ He always spoke like that when it came to ice, with urgency and need. Story Andy Knight Photography Jeremiah Watt Published in Sidetracked Volume 14, this story was dedicated to the memory of Scott Adamson – an incredible human and accomplished climber lost on Ogre II, Pakistan, in August 2016. One of Scott’s passions was finding and climbing Zion ice. He spent many hours studying maps and many days seeking out the fickle, ethereal huge pillars hidden within remote slot canyons. He left us with love, bold passion, and free spirit. A part of the ice and stone, and on mountains forever higher.

TAKING FLIGHT Words: Liv Sansoz and Aurelie MORRISON GONIN Photography: Aurelie MORRISON GONIN Location: Jordan Wadi Rum in Jordan is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its natural and cultural richness, and the rock climbing there is very special, renowned throughout the world. But when climber Liv Sansoz, photographer Aurélie Gonin, and paragliding instructor Zeb Roche made their way to Wadi Rum, their goal was more than climbing: they wanted to fly from its sandstone towers after climbing them. Wadi Rum, a desert valley in southern Jordan, is a destination whose name alone conjures dreams in the mind. And some adventures arise spontaneously, born from friendship and a passion for adventure itself. A version of this story was first published in Sidetracked Volume 26; it now features in Voyages - Sidetracked Beyond. https://lnkd.in/g3jE-R2p

SLEEPING ON THE EDGE ‘Nobody move!’ The command came just as I had worked up the nerve to peer over the edge of the Trillium, a cross between a hammock and a climber’s portaledge large enough for three people. Myself and my teammates – rope rigger Ollie Laker, A&E doctor and tree climber John Pike, and photographer Zak Bentley – had spent the last few hours rigging it above the yawning 98m drop of Yorkshire’s notorious pothole, Gaping Gill. VOYAGES - SIDETRACKED BEYOND Moose Tracks Under Water Words & Photography: Ian Finch Location: Minnesota and Ontario In 2023, Ian Finch embarked on a canoe expedition seeking to understand why the moose is declining catastrophically in Ontario and Minnesota. The aim was to film and photograph the moose in their natural habitat, and connect with Indigenous biologist Seth as they paddled, learning about ecosystem health and potential issues revolving around the second-largest land mammal in North America.
