Time to renew UK-China business links? Recently I had a chance to visit Shenzhen and its Yuehai Avenue (Avenue is the lowest administrative level of Chinese cities). With about 14 km² land mass, Yuehai is tiny. But it's also a giant - boasting a nearly £50bn total GDP and a staggering £200,000 GDP per head in 2022! It also hosts more than 34,000 firms including a range of well-know high-tech companies such as Tencent, Mindray and many others. I was really pleased to introduce to the local authority in Yuehai the high-performance, e-sports and shoe-making industries in and around Northamptonshire and in particular Silverstone Technology Cluster. With a new UK government now in place, I can't help thinking if we should now put aside our differences and pursue the tremendous synergies.
