Yesterday, our CEO Omar Al-Hasso and Head of Land and Development David Samson attended the Temporary Accommodation Conference hosted by Devonshires and Campbell Tickell. The discussions underscored some of the deeply concerning statistics shared by the National Housing Federation. 💡 63% of households in temporary accommodation are households with children 💡 50% of children in temporary accommodation have had to change schools at least once. Even more troubling is the fact that 87% of these households have no additional needs, meaning they are trapped in temporary accommodation simply due to a lack of housing supply. Despite these statistics, it was encouraging to hear from a number of councils on the partnerships they’ve formed to tackle the crisis head-on. Bringing empty homes back into use - and by the way there are 260,000 empty homes nationally! - is one of the easy solutions to solving the housing & homelessness crisis. We can't just sit back & wait for the construction industry to gear up to build new homes; we haven't got time to wait. We need deliverable solutions now; there is no silver bullet. There are 117,000 homeless people & 151,000 children in temporary accommodation (an ironic oxymoron; it's anything but temporary). Last year local authorities spent over £2.2billion on TA & it's going up. Just think what we could achieve if that amount was used to buy, build, convert properties & increase supply. [Although of course we'd still be spending that amount until we have affordable supply to move families into & I'm ignoring the issue of LHA, benefit cap & affordability that continues to trap people in TA ...] I hope the budget delivers some real, tangible opportunities for change (including measures to support a functioning PRS & encourage private investment in affordable housing).

We all know the size and shape of the problem we are trying to tackle here, it was great to be in a room of like minded organisations looking at different solutions to try and find a way through our homelessness crisis. At SimplyPhi | B Corp we are working with 30+ councils across England, helping to address the undersupply of affordable housing for homeless households and those living in unsuitable and expensive nightly rate accommodation.
