Section 21 evictions, also known as "no-fault" evictions, are a major cause of homelessness - at least 26,000 households have been evicted through the law since 2019, according to Shelter. Section 21 allows landlords to evict tenants with just two months’ notice without giving them a reason. This leaves thousands of people who are renting in the lurch, forever unstable and unable to find a place to build a life. The insecurity can place a huge burden on people affecting their health and wellbeing. Some renters are afraid to speak out about issues with their housing for fear of being evicted. In tomorrow's #KingsSpeech, the Government must stick to its manifesto pledge to "immediately" ban so-called no-fault evictions and deliver further improvements for renters through the Renters Reform Bill. PREVENTION FIRST 🛑 Every year, we work to prevent Londoners from losing their homes, rather than waiting until they are at crisis point. We provide long-term support with a range of challenges including health issues, debt and arrears and benefit concerns. #ThrowbackThursday time. 👇 Last November, we were in Stylist Magazinewith a three-page feature highlighting our pioneering work in supporting women experiencing homelessness. The piece delves into the unique and traumatic experiences women face while living on the streets. We’re proud of the three extraordinary women who shared their powerful, albeit hard-to-hear, stories speaking about experiences of abuse, neglect, and fear. Unfortunately, these aren’t isolated experiences. For women sleeping on the street, violence and abuse are nearly universal. That’s why our work, from our specialised women’s services to co-leading the first-ever National Women’s Rough Sleeping Census, is critical to ensure women experiencing homelessness get the proper support they need and deserve.
