Transforming the lives of children and young people through music and nurturing relationships.
About us
Sistema Scotland is a charity on a mission improve lives and strengthen communities through music and nurturing relationships. We do this through our transformational social change and music education programme, Big Noise, where the symphony orchestra becomes a community that supports children and young people to gain vital life skills such as confidence, resilience, team work, pride, creativity, and aspiration, and aims to strengthen community cohesion and tackle inequalities in some of Scotland’s most disadvantaged areas. Through music and nurturing relationships, from infancy to adulthood, Big Noise supports participants’ wellbeing and helps them reach their full potential. This enables them to become happy, healthy adults and lead successful and fulfilled lives. Big Noise programmes supporting a combined 3,500 children and young people are delivered in the targeted communities of Raploch and Fallin in Stirling, Govanhill in Glasgow, Douglas in Dundee, Torry in Aberdeen, and Wester Hailes in Edinburgh.

As a third sector organisation, we have been fortunate to receive such robust and insightful independent evaluation of our #BigNoise programmes by Glasgow Centre for Population Health over a period of several years and it's great to see them revisit some of their key findings as part of their 'From the Archives' series, cementing why 'Big Noise matters more than ever' 👇
🎶 Transforming Lives Through Music: Why Sistema Scotland's Big Noise Matters More Than Ever 🎶 📰 carousel read time: 4 minutes 📰 In a world full of real-time information and rapid change, it’s easy to overlook past research or interventions. As we face widening health inequalities, a cost-of-living crisis, and persistent challenges like child poverty and the educational attainment gap, some lessons from the past hold even greater value today. Our first "from the archives" piece is on the GCPH evaluation, led by Chris Harkins, of Sistema Scotland’s Big Noise orchestral programme. Based on the renowned El Sistema model, Big Noise provides free, high-quality music tuition in disadvantaged areas, offering a pathway to improved mental health, wellbeing, educational attainment, and lifelong social benefits. 🎻 Big Noise is more than a music programme—it’s a symbol of hope, a community beacon, and a lifeline for many.

🗞 A superb Monday morning read by our very own Director of Music & Curriculum, David Munn, about how music changed his own life, and the opportunities #BigNoiseUnitedOrchestra is offering to our young musicians 👇 "Back in the 1980s, Shettleston, my local area, had one of the lowest life expectancies in Europe and, while there was a strong sense of community, it had its challenges. Many might not have expected me to become a classical musician." "For me, an orchestra is a model for society. At Big Noise United, everyone contributes, and everyone’s role is meaningful. In music, everybody wins – every note is important and that means every person is important." 🔗 Read the full article here https://lnkd.in/eWeuE7T4

Their Majesties The King and The Queen will join a special celebration marking 25 years since the Scottish Parliament reconvened. This event on Saturday, 28 September will feature a showcase of Scottish music and culture, with performances from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Sistema Scotland and more. MSPs have also invited “local heroes” – community members who’ve made extraordinary contributions across Scotland. It’s an opportunity to celebrate both our country’s political journey and the people who continue to shape it. Presiding Officer Alison Johnstone MSP said of the planned event: “I look forward to welcoming people from all over Scotland for a day of reflection and celebration.” You can find out more about Parliament's 25th anniversary at https://ow.ly/McNp50Tm6Gy #Scotland #ScottishParliament #RoyalFamily #TheRoyalFamily #ScotParl25
