The importance of healthy #peat uplands, including for natural #flood management 👇 #NFM #UplandManagement #PeatlandRestoration #SphagnumMoss Also see our blog post on #Calderdale's Sphagnum moss project: https://lnkd.in/eXpshY8J
For Peats Sake! Our UK upland peatland should be dominated by blanket bog. It should be rich in moss It’s not. Our moors get the highest of rainfall and should be an almost permanently wet landscape. It’s not. From medieval times, much of the upland area of Britain has been drained and cut for fuel peat around the hill margins. From the mid-20th century right up to the 1980s, successive governments invested heavily in draining blanket bogs, to stimulate production. Payments were given to incentivise drainage, and across our landscapes even blanket bogs are riddled with drainage features. Drainage grants ceased in the mid-1980s, but governments offered higher payments for increased livestock densities resulting in an a ~30% increase in sheep numbers on UK moors. Drained landscape = fast runoff = dry peat = land subsidence = degraded peat = fire risk and associated large carbon emissions. Faster run off = floods, and erosion, and poor water quality Collectively all the above = a major shift from bog vegetation to heath and acid grassland, accompanied by dramatic reductions in key peatland species such as Sphagnum and rare, persecuted species. HOWEVER! This can change, and the benefits are significant. Just a water quality example is shown in the below graphic. There’s an extensive restoration effort, and this landscape plays a huge role in our collective futures: 💧 Security for drinking water 🌊 Reduce risk of floods ☀️ provide drought resilience 🌱 increases biodiversity 🏭 sequesters carbon 🌍 good for all of us More information based on local NW geographies Greater Manchester: https://lnkd.in/exFuRkYw Lancashire: https://lnkd.in/erG4XBsQ Yorkshire: https://lnkd.in/emw4uGfp Guidance: https://lnkd.in/ebX3JkEq

We’re so pleased to be part of the White Rose Forest steering group - today’s workshop in Leeds brought together key players from North and West Yorkshire to share learning and best practice, and help to shape the forward planning for the ‘Green Streets’ agenda, which is all about urban forestry. We, of course, advocated for calling it the ‘Green Blue Streets’ plan, and ensuring the flood prevention benefits of urban ‘greening’ are being realised. One street tree (with good tree pit) can hold back around 5 cubic m of water in a storm event - imagine the impact of lots of them! You only have to look at the news lately to see the devastating flooding across the south of England and parts of Europe, our hearts go out to all those affected 😓 Extensive flood resilience works have been carried out across Calderdale on engineered schemes and natural flood management but it’s not nearly enough, we must do more. The collaborative works we have done with National Trust: Hardcastle Crags with many volunteers provides anecdotal evidence that Hebden water is less flashy, the many natural flood management grants with Calderdale Council have increased our resilience but we need more! Do take a look at our website for simple, practical advice on what you can do to help www.slowtheflow.net #slowtheflow #calderdale #floodresilience #naturalfloodmanagement #hebdenbridge #flooding

The rain is crazy here in Brighton! This isn't a weather update though...this is a call for more SUDs (Sustainable Urban Drainage). This much run off is an example of what can cause sewer overwhelm and flooding. So.. what can we do? Pop a planter or rainwater harvester under those downpipes rather than letting them shoot the rain all over the place. Let's keep clean water clean and in the natural cycle.

Lots of opportunities for free advice locally, if you own land and want to use it for good! Slowing the flow of the water that floods others downstream can be paired with other land uses, and can be funded through grants...why not get in touch with Calder Rivers Trust and see if they can help? https://lnkd.in/eyFSGt9N #SlowTheFlow #Calderdale #FloodManagement #NFM #Farming #Landowners
Did you know Calder Rivers Trust offers free, confidential advice on land management and funding opportunities for your farm or holding? If you would like to arrange a visit, or just have a chat to see what we could do for you, contact farmadvice@calderandcolneriverstrust.org

🎉 Big River Watch starts today! The countdown is over. It’s finally time to get outside, connect with your local river, and record what you see with the free Big River Watch app! Our rivers are in trouble, but there’s something that you can do to support the work being done to restore them. This week, join the movement fighting for our waterways and help us build a big picture of river health across the UK and Ireland by completing a short Big River Watch survey of your local river. From wildlife to litter, every observation counts! You've got one week to complete a survey and send in your results. We can't wait to see what you record this year. Don't forget to share your river watching with us - use #BigRiverWatch and tag us @theriverstrust.
