🚀 We Made It to Space! 🌌 We are thrilled to announce that the 𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐈𝐑 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝟐.𝟎 satellite and payload have successfully reached space and are in great condition, continuously transmitting invaluable data back to Earth! 📡✨ Space is one of the harshest environments imaginable—extreme temperatures, intense radiation, and the relentless vacuum push every component to its limits. Yet, the 𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐈𝐑 payload is proving its resilience, maintaining daily communication with Earth. A huge thank you to Hydra Space Systems, Alba Orbital, and AMSAT-EA for their support! Over the next several weeks, the data we collect will be crucial in evaluating how our smart radiator performs under these extreme conditions, providing critical insights to advance the next generation of our 𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐈𝐑 space technology. A few years ago, reaching space was just an ambitious goal. Today, through innovation, collaboration, and dedication, we are pushing boundaries and laying the foundation for new space applications that will transform our daily lives. Onward and upward! 🚀💫 #SpaceTech #Innovation #SmartIR #SatelliteEngineering #BeyondEarth #DataDrivenFuture #GrapheneInSpace Margherita Sepioni Pietro Steiner, PhD Ciaran Mullan, Ryan Teare Quinn, Laurent Bernard Raihan Choudhury, James Greer, Aimee Duffy , Amy Hearst, John Patterson CB FIET, Coskun Kocabas, Paul Kahn, Dan Thomas, Shruti Iyengar, Daniel Melendrez, Graphene - The University of Manchester

We’re starting 2025 with a groundbreaking achievement! Our partner SmartIR, based at the Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre (GEIC), is launching Mission 2.0 aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 tomorrow. This mission integrates graphene-enabled adaptive radiator technology into a pico-satellite, marking a revolutionary step in satellite thermal management and graphene commercialisation. Following the success of Mission 1 in 2023, this launch propels SmartIR’s ambitious plan for four Low Earth Orbit (LEO) missions in 2025, in collaboration with leading satellite manufacturers Hydra Space Systems and Alba Orbital. 📖 Discover how graphene is driving innovation in space technology: https://lnkd.in/esiVDHNN

Amazing day at the GEIC discussing the commercialization of graphene! Following my PhD in Manchester, I've been on this incredible journey for over 11 years, and the adventure continues here at SmartIR! 🚀 The key takeaway? Partnerships and collaborations are crucial. The graphene community needs to work closely with external industries to meet existing demands and solve challenges. This approach ensures we avoid being self-referential and stay focused on real-world applications. We had the honor of meeting again Prof. Sir Kostya Novoselov and presenting our projects and applications to him! What an amotion after all these years! A big thank you to The University of Manchester and the Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre for making this possible. Thanks to all the SmartIR team for having prepared with amazing care today’s event! An amazing day yesterday spent with the incredible SmartIR team at the Sci-Tech Campus in Daresbury! We often rush through our daily tasks, having just delivered our payload for Mission 2 and already embarking on Mission 2.1 for early 2025, while also working on other additional Space and Defence related projects. In the midst of this hustle, it's so important to pause and reflect on our goals, identify challenges, and brainstorm solutions. Yesterday, we did just that—and even enjoyed a lovely walk by the canal, which gave us a chance to connect and recharge.⛽️🏞💪 I'm thrilled to welcome James Greer, our new Project Engineer, to the team! And I also take the chance to welcome Martin Hyman, our new part-time CFO who , unfortunately, could not be present yesterday. A big thank you to my entire team for their relentless motivation and excitement, tackling the challenges faced by a young company in the Space and Defence sectors. Your passion and dedication inspire me every day.
