General Manager Life Sciences @ Smartling

“Time is life.” I recently heard Rob Goodwin, Sr. VP at Pfizer, use this phrase to describe the vital role that time plays in the drug development lifecycle. This mantra has stuck with me. Having spent nearly two decades in the translation industry, I know how crucial it is to deliver translations quickly and accurately. In life sciences, every delay in communication can have real consequences for patients. That’s why "time is life" resonates so deeply with me. Whether we’re translating the latest clinical trial results or protocols for life-saving medications, the faster we translate with accuracy, the greater impact we can have on patients’ lives. Recently, I began to notice a seismic shift in the translation space - one I can only liken to how the iPhone transformed the way people stay connected. It once seemed unattainable to produce translations in the healthcare space that are both fast AND accurate, but unprecedented advancements in AI, automation, and technology are starting to make it possible. The global life sciences sector will no longer need to compromise between quality, cost, and speed - allowing them to more quickly deliver cures to market and do more for patients around the world. Anticipating this pivotal moment is why I joined Smartling, the company leading this transformation. With AI-powered solutions that cut the time it takes to deliver high-quality translations in half, Smartling stands at the forefront of this industry-wide revolution. Their technology enables accurate, rapid translation on a scale we never imagined. Never Think "Will My Translations Meet Expectations?" Again | Welocalize Helps Translation Managers in Life Sciences Companies Meet their Business Goals Beyond # of Words Translated, Turn-Around Time, and Cost Savings.

"𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿: 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗢𝗜" Let me share with the Localization experts in my network the on-demand recording of yesterday's webinar by Smartling with industry expert Kevin O'Donnell. My main take-away from Kevin for Localization experts who need to justify the ROI of localization: Don't come up with new metrics. Make sure you understand which metrics exactly leadership is interested in (e.g. NPS, less support calls,...), and then make sure that you speak the right language with management in terms of metrics you focus on. Here's the 40 minutes video that can be accessed without signing up on Vimeo: https://lnkd.in/dnvK6XW8 Hat tip to Cassie Thompson and Ryan Soos for having Kevin as guest.

Earlier this month, our team traveled to Chicago for the 16th biennial conference of the AMTA Association for Machine Translation in the Americas (AMTA 2024)🏙️ They left the city inspired by all the advancements in AI-powered solutions that are breaking the bounds of what’s possible in translation tech💥 Here are Smartling’s key takeaways from AMTA 24 🔑 🪴 Adaptive TM With the rise of LLMs, TM leverage is higher than ever. We can now continuously refine TMs to deliver better translations and adapt auto-generated ones. This is a space where Smartling is ahead of the curve (shoutout to our AI Toolkit 🗣🧰) , and it’s clear that Adaptive TM is the future of Fuzzy Match Repair and automated post-editing (APE). 📖 Style guides, reinvented Style guides were always an important part of the translation process, and they will continue to be in the future. The question is - in what format? Keep an eye out for transformations in style guide formatting and structure to match the upcoming wave of automated translations👀 🤖 Prompt Engineering on the Rise Prompt engineering was identified a year ago as a new skill in high demand. A year later, we are still discovering best practices for prompt engineering for different use cases and across models. 🎯 Quality Estimation (QE) is quintessential The industry is moving fast on QE, and the key will be how companies start integrating the quality estimation into smart routing and other automation steps in their workflow. 📄 Document-Level Translation We see translations at a document level playing a huge part in the future of translations, and in our opinion, any TMS worth their salt will be looking to integrate this into their system. The question then becomes: where does this leave us with TM design, storage and leveraging? 👋 Out with the old metrics, and in with the new While BLEU remains a common go-to metric for a lot of evaluation tasks, it’s clear that more sophisticated metrics like COMET are more applicable for evaluating the modern state of translation engines. The sky's the limit when it comes to finding the best metric to automatically measure quality translations. 🤼 Choose your fighter: NMT or LLMs The lines between Neural Machine Translation (NMT) and Large Language Models (LLMs) are blurring. While NMT remains the go-to for most translation tasks, LLMs are on the rise for a growing number. We're seeing great potential in experimenting with hybrid approaches, and a human evaluation of NMT, AutoML, and LLMs might help us better understand how to strike the right balance. We’re excited to continue evaluating these trends and pushing the envelope in terms of what’s possible with AI-powered translations💡 Shoutout to the team for these insights! Jennifer W., Benjamin Loy, Alex Yanishevsky, Mei Chai Zheng, Anastasiia Yashchenko, Jason Rauchwerk, Marina Sánchez Torrón 🗣️ #AMTA2024
