We are delighted to share the Academy for the Mathematical Sciences recently published a new report which found the mathematical sciences contributed an exceptional £495 billion a year to the UK economy in 2023. Other key findings include: ✅ Mathematical science occupations constituted 13% of UK employment. ✅ Salaries in mathematical science occupations were 24% higher than the UK average. ✅ Workers in mathematical science occupations were 58% more productive than the UK average. This research underlines the significant economic contribution of maths to the UK economy and the need to embed policy that maximises its value. Statement from Alison Etheridge, President of the Academy for the Mathematical Sciences Over the last few months, there has been a lot of work behind the scenes at the Academy for the Mathematical Sciences. We have been driving forward the ambitions of the Academy to be an authoritative, persuasive, and influential voice for the whole of the mathematical sciences – and to provide crucial connectivity between academia, education, business, industry, and government. We are very grateful for the continued commitment and support from both within and beyond the mathematical sciences community, and reaffirm our determination to press ahead with the development of a vibrant Academy. We look forward to updating you further in the coming weeks, on both key outputs and on the funding model for the Academy going forward. Alison's statement provides many examples of our ongoing work. We are delighted to reveal that 2 of our projects have been shortlisted for the Utility Week Awards! In the Innovation Award - Energy category, our work with National Energy System Operator on Dynamic Reserve Setting uses a data-driven, probabilistic and explainable machine learning methodology. This helps the control room balance the energy grid more efficiently and effectively. In the Unlocking Data category, the Vulnerability Future Energy Scenarios project, in partnership with Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks, uses explainable AI to provide a detailed understanding of their most vulnerable customers and the factors driving vulnerability. As our energy system innovates and advances, it is vital that potentially vulnerable people are not left behind. It is wonderful that these projects are being recognised with nominations for these prestigious awards. They reflect our commitment to driving innovation and making a positive impact within the energy sector. Congratulations to our fantastic partners, and the VFES and DRS teams! #UWA24 #AI #Energy

Amazing day on Wednesday celebrating the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications 60th. Great conversations and opportunity to reflect on what our community can do for the future of mathematics in our country. We’ll be doing our part Smith Institute ❤️
We’d like to extend our gratitude to all of our guests, members, speakers and panellists who helped make our 60th Anniversary Event yesterday a momentous occasion. Thank you to our President Hannah Fry for chairing the event and leading with inspiration. We’re delighted with the excellent feedback. The discussions were thought-provoking and raised important considerations to advancement of mathematics and our community of mathematicians. We’re grateful for your support over the last 60 Years. It was a fantastic event celebrating our three key milestones; our 60th anniversary, the 100th anniversary of the birth of first President Sir James Lighthill and the 20th anniversary of the Early Career Mathematicians committee. #IMA60

Last night, I had the pleasure of attending the second lecture in The Alan Turing Institute's series on the relationship between AI and society. Dr Abeba Birhane gave a compelling, insightful talk on trustworthiness, regulation, and the impacts of generative AI. Can we trust AI? More importantly, can we trust 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 behind its development and deployment? The jury is still out on that.

So far, 2024 has been a landmark year for AI regulation. The EU AI Act, in force since August, is making waves. Come February 2025, prohibitions on certain AI systems begin. Providers of high-risk AI face substantial obligations, from risk management to human oversight. Across the Channel, the UK joined other signatories to the Council of Europe's Framework Convention on AI last month. This framework demands comprehensive measures to identify, assess, and mitigate AI risks. It emphasises oversight, like the EU Act, and digital literacy. Meanwhile, on the other side of the Atlantic, California's Governor Newsom vetoed a landmark AI safety bill. With 32 of the world's top 50 AI companies calling California home, Newsom advocates for a nuanced approach. He argues for regulation based on deployment contexts, and calls for consideration of potential risks from smaller, specialised models. 🟣 While the UK and EU push forward with comprehensive AI regulation, is California's more cautious approach wiser in the long run? 🟣 Can legislation keep pace with rapid tech advancements? 🟣 Are we scrambling to control the already uncontrollable? At Smith Institute, we advocate for explainability and trustworthiness, which relies on digital literacy and education. For AI to be used responsibly and trustfully, people need to understand its limits and be able to carefully review its outputs. Want to learn more about AI explainability? Our data-rich world must strike a balance. To draw valuable insights and make strategic decisions, datasets must contain meaningful information. However, they must not compromise the identity of individuals or reveal sensitive information. Discover how we reverse-engineered a dataset to identify edge-case strategies a user could carry out to extract sensitive information from an analytics platform. To counter these risks, we advised practical countermeasures that could be put in place, exploiting modern mathematical techniques in data fuzzing and the use of robust statistics.
