Yesterday was the first Labour budget for 14 years 💼 And while we welcome the initial £3.4bn to support the Warm Homes Plan, along with the extension of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, there remains a notable gap between the level of investment required to support energy efficiency and the green economy. At Snugg, we believe that retrofitting our nation’s homes isn’t just about energy saving; it’s about creating healthier, warmer homes that support health and well-being. To help UK homeowners improve the energy efficiency of their homes, we’re calling on the government to: 👉 Provide clarity on grant levels and eligibility criteria under the Warm Homes Plan 👉 Support low-interest lending options below standard interest rates to make home energy improvements financially accessible 👉 Introduce energy efficiency adjusted stamp duty 👉 Provide support for digital-first homeowner advice services that simplify the process for homeowners 👉 Reform wholesale electricity pricing to reduce energy costs and encourage take-up of low-carbon heating solutions Addressing climate change is one of the biggest challenges we face as a nation. That’s why one of Snugg’s key goals is to speed up the UK’s transition to net zero carbon emissions. The UK government must move quickly to support this transition, and we call on them to address these concerns urgently. Last week we hosted a roundtable in Leeds with local mortgage lenders, with valuable input from Which? and the National Wealth Fund. We shared some of the challenges mortgage lenders face to reduce carbon emissions from their mortgage book and brainstormed ideas to overcome some of the obstacles. We'll shortly share a summary of the discussion with those interested, which includes the role savings products have to play in helping homeowners prepare for the net zero transition.

Last year, Scottish Building Society teamed up with Snugg to help make home energy efficiency simpler for their members. Since then, we've worked together on content, attended events with mortgage brokers, and we're excited to have been invited to speak on the first episode of their new member vodcast. In the episode, Michelle Robinson joined forces with GreenFox Energy to chat with Sheena from the SBS Sustainability Working Group about the importance of reducing energy bills and carbon emissions.

Rightmove’s third Greener Homes Report has been published this morning. The headline is that progress is being made to decarbonise the UKs housing stock, albeit slowly. Some takeaways include... 🏡 A green wealth divide is emerging 50% of properties valued over £1 million have significantly improved their rating since their last EPC, compared to only 32% of properties valued under £400,000. One to watch closely if we are to ensure a just transition. 🗝 Legislation for minimum energy efficiency standards in the Private Rented Sector is coming. Half of landlords (50%) are concerned that the government will introduce costly charges for not meeting EPC requirements. 💰 Saving money on bills continues to be a driver for interest, and installation costs a barrier. 81% of home-movers would consider making green home improvements if they could save money on energy bills and 79% of home-owners would be encouraged to make green home improvements if they had access to government grants or incentives. We’re proud to have contributed to this year’s report alongside HomeViews, The Hill Group, Home Builders Federation, Taylor Wimpey plc, Home Builders Federation, Parkers Witney & Eyn, ARLA Propertymark, Leaders Romans Group, Countrywide Surveying Services, Octopus Energy, Lloyds Banking Group. ☕ Definitely worth a read with your morning brew, the full report is linked in the comments.
