About us

Social Investment Scotland (SIS) is a charity and social enterprise that provides loans to other charities, social enterprises and community groups across Scotland. We provide investment for other charities and social enterprises looking to make a positive impact on people's lives, society or the environment. Our mission is simple. We aim to make a lasting, sustainable impact on communities, by helping organisations continue doing the great work they do or expand on that work. Since 2001 we've invested over £130 million in organisations across Scotland, and we continue to manage the largest social enterprise fund in the country.

It's wonderful to see progress with the latest round of dormant asset allocations in England to support a range of priorities, including support for #financialinclusion through Fair4All Finance. However, at Social Investment Scotland, through our support for Financial Inclusion for Scotland, we've developed a strategy that calls for a consultation on how the Scottish share of these assets are invested. Financial Inclusion is a UK wide problem and Scotland is already being left behind. The need for this consultation to take place is now even more urgent. We’re delighted the Government have reconfirmed an extra £87.5m in dormant assets funding will be allocated to #financialinclusion over the next four years, through Fair4All Finance. The announcement follows the decision last year, following consultation, that financial inclusion will remain a cause of the expanded Dormant Assets Scheme. This means future funding from the scheme will continue to help people in vulnerable circumstances access fair financial products and services. This extra funding will help us invest more in scaling the financial products and services already shown to benefit customers and continue testing new solutions. As always, we will look to structure this investment in partnership with other commercial funds to leverage dormant assets funding and extend the impact as far as possible. • Huge congratulations to all the volunteers at Spartans Community Foundation - what a well-deserved honour for all the amazing youth work, education programmes and volunteering opportunities you deliver for communities in North Edinburgh.👏

We’re thrilled to share that the amazing volunteers from Spartans Community Foundation have been awarded The King’s Award for Voluntary Service for 2024! This is the UK’s top honour for local volunteer groups - the equivalent of an MBE. Spartans Community Foundation is one of 281 local charities, social enterprises, and volunteer groups to receive this award this year. The King’s Award for Voluntary Service was set up in 2002 to mark the late Queen’s Golden Jubilee and continues now in King Charles’ reign, recognising volunteer groups doing incredible work to support their communities. Next summer, Spartans Community Foundation reps will accept the award from the Lord-Lieutenant of Edinburgh, and two of our volunteers will also be invited to a garden party at Holyroodhouse. Debbi McCulloch, CEO of Spartans Community Foundation, shared: “We’re absolutely thrilled and honoured that our volunteers have received The King’s Award for Voluntary Service. This award is a tribute to their dedication, passion and hard work that makes a positive difference in our community every day. We couldn’t be prouder of this achievement and can’t wait to keep building a better future together.”

Director, Media Education CIC - Community Development, Participatory Filmmaking, Creative Participatory Research, Storytelling For Change, Service Design.

This year I completed Ambitions for Leadership run by Social Investment Scotland I went along to see what I could learn for Media Education, a bit skeptical as to what it would be like. We are a cooperative so I was also not sure about the leadership angle. It was our first involvement with SIS despite operating as a CIC for 8 years. I can’t recommend the course enough. The energy and enthusiasm of everyone I met was amazing. If you do the course and get the chance to have Rachael Arnold as a facilitator don’t hesitate, she is incredible. There is a real understanding of what running a social enterprise entails at an intuitive level and what it can be like leading an organisation, even with supportive peers. They helped me and Media Ed reframe our understanding of ourselves and our abilities. They are the best antidote to a Scottish Education in the 80s where being too big for your boots and knowing your place was the order of the day. The lovely thing is they help you find your comfort spot with understanding your offer and your strengths but always based on values and integrity. I have a notebook full of the discussions and ideas and when I sit down to a difficult proposal, tender, or prepare for a meeting or just on less confident days, I open it and it sets me up. I get my ambitions head on. Honestly, go for this course if you get the chance. The additional benefit is you are in a group with other social enterprises. I met fantastic organisations and some really lovely people to share learning with. Can’t recommend it enough, I will miss it. #socialenterprise #organisationalvalues #collaboration

I’m incredibly proud of the work we do at Social Investment Scotland and the strategic partnerships we create. Yesterday’s FIRNS event with our partners NatureScot, The National Lottery Heritage Fund and The Scottish Government is a prime example. So exciting to watch my colleague Naomi Johnson MBA in action facilitating the FIRNS community of practice. Really great discussions around nature based investing.
