Socius Health reposted this
The 3C’s - Clinician Content Creators 🎙 It was great to meet and chat with the legend that is Dr Karan Rajan prior to the Doctify and YouTube Health evening at Google HQ last Friday that James, Sanay and myself went along to represent Socius Health at. Thanks Suman Dr. Vishaal Virani, MBBS Unless one has been living under a rock, it is hard not to note the rising impact social media has played in our lives and thus the relevance of online influencers. 📲 When it comes to health content online - traditionally experts and authorities have been slow to capitalise on social media, thus allowing the rise of a range of ‘influencers’ / charlatans, many with no credentials sharing information online often with selfish agendas. This has led to the prevalence of misinformation these past few years. As a clinician who takes pride in communicating with patients, taking the time to make a patient feel comfortable to open up, ask the right questions, respond appropriately and empathetically, educate but not dictate, I know it can be a professionally rewarding task when done right. But it is not easy, it takes time. Time that clinicians don’t have.🗣 Having spent time in healthtech startups, I’m always keen to see the scalability potential. Tech is innately scalable. The way that lots of healthcare is delivered isn’t currently. But that is changing. Communication with healthcare providers is being reduced due to increased demands on providers and tech has a role here, but it can’t replace all elements of communication. Nor should it. Difficult conversations. Breaking bad news. Eliciting crucial information from a patient is sometimes best done by a fellow human. So what about Clinician Content Creators? For years many in the profession have shied away from any involvement in social media. Keeping their professional lives off profiles, with perhaps the biggest exception being LinkedIn a professionals platform. This is not without good reasons. GMC, NHS, employers Guidance has typically discouraged engagement. Risks of legal challenges, being hounded by patients, families or even people who are not your patients are one thing. Having people come to harm from misinterpreting what you say online is quite another. Yet over the past few years there has been a rise in the Clinician Content Creator. Several have grown a following during the pandemic when rather than taking to social media to copy the latest trending dance, they took to combat misinformation. And now are taking on bigger public health challenges with a global audience. Given the accessibility social media offers both to creators and consumers, it is no surprise that this is scaling so well. There’s a lot more to speak about with regards to the great potential that CCC’s have. I feel in future this will impact not only public health awareness but also healthcare delivery, recruitment into clinical trials and beyond. And CCC’s like Dr Karan Rajan are understandably leading the way.🚀
