As practitioners, Landscape Architects have a professional duty to society. This includes the future; designing for the long term is important. We cover maintenance and management as part of the SoftscapeMatters lecture series. www.softscapematters.com
Softscape Matters Lecture Series
Higher Education
No longer a Landscape Institute core skill, these lectures fill a gap in softscape detailing skills for professionals.
About us
Lectures for Landscape Architects and Built Environment Professionals. Essential for those pursuing chartered membership. We address the knowledge gap for softscape designers by teaching a proven methodology. Simplify your workflow and learn how to create coherent information for contractors and suppliers to price and implement planting plans. Discover how utilising typologies as key design assets can enable you to produce adaptable project information that can be reused and repurposed throughout the project’s lifespan—including maintenance and management plans that can last decades. Develop proactive skills to ensure success beyond practical completion. The sessions count for 8 hours of CPD in total, but you can earn more by following the simple workflow.

Most courses about planting focus on garden design or forestry: gentle and relatively safe environments to establish plant material. Landscape Architecture is much more than that, requiring specific planting design and detail skills which are not covered in depth as part of our training. The Softscape Matters Lecture Series provides a foundation for planting design that is appropriate to any site, and which allows your ideas to evolve from concept sketches to long-term management plans using methodologies that result in efficient time management, clear and detailed drawings and schedules which can be re-purposed for any design stage. Focusing on planting typologies, the lectures highlight best practice to ensure softscape procurement and implementation which is easily costed, rapidly modified, and usable by both contractors and suppliers for maximum efficiency. The lectures are led by Michele Lavelle, and supplemented by talks from both a landscape sub-contractor (Paul Lynch) and a nursery supplier (Wesley Elkins), to bring real-world expertise and experience. This Autumn has two sessions left: 04-07 November and 02-05 December. Tickets can be booked for any combination of attendance. The lectures count as CPD. Vistit www.softscapematters.com for details.
