We received some very exciting news this week - Boys on the Verge of Tears has been nominated for an #OlivierAward ✨ We're so proud to have produced this show with such an incredible cast and creative team behind it, and of course it's writer, Sam Grabiner. Boys on the Verge of Tears won the #VerityBargateAward, Soho Theatre's new writing award, back in 2022 and had it's critically acclaimed and five star studded run at ours last Spring. Since then, Sam has gone on to win The Stage Media Company Ltd's Debut Award for Best Writer for the production, and has now been nominated for Best New Production in Affiliate Theatre at the Olivier Awards. Dating back to the early 1970s at the Soho Poly Theatre, we've always been about championing fresh voices and new writing! And The Tony Craze Award is a testament to our commitment in nurturing emerging playwrights. The Tony Craze Award is open each year to writers on our Writers’ Lab – an entry-level course supporting new writers to create a play over nine months. This year, we’re excited to celebrate Zahra Dalilah, whose play Anatomy of a Black Rebellion is the 2024 winner. Huge congratulations also to Yasmin Twomey for Nestings and Jaisal for West Country Oriental Gentleman, who receive highly commended recognition. Here’s the full list: WINNER: Anatomy of a Black Rebellion by Zahra Dalilah SHORTLIST: Bhaijaan by Abir Mohammad HIGHLY COMMENDED: Nestings by Yasmin Twomey Plewds by Kathrine Payne The Undying by Rea Dennhardt Patel HIGHLY COMMENDED: West Country Oriental Gentleman by Jaisal Our Head of Creative Engagement, Jessica Draper: “It’s a privilege to support such dynamic talents and the Tony Craze Award continues to champion early-career writers, providing a vital platform for their growth and recognition. We look forward to seeing these writers' remarkable contributions shape the future of theatre.”

It's been a busy one
I am so thrilled to have been part of this major milestone for Soho Theatre Walthamstow! This week, we announced the first wave of shows for our brand-new venue, opening this May. It’s been nearly 15yrs in the making, and while we’re not quite at the finish line, getting these first shows on sale feels like a huge moment. Massive congrats to our Soho Theatre team and Sam Hansford for their incredible work in launching the programme and campaign—it’s been heartwarming to see the response already! In the run up to opening in May there will be many thanks due. For now, we want to say (again and again), that none of it would have been possible without the grassroots campaigners who worked so hard to save this beautiful building. This project simply wouldn’t exist without their passion and dedication. While there are too many people to name, it also feels wrong not to mention Bill Hodgson, co-founder of the The McGuffin Film Society, who has been dedicated to this space for over 20 years. We couldn’t be more delighted that Bill and the McGuffins will be part of our opening season with a series of film screenings. At a time when the excellent Scene Change report from National Theatre rightly reflects on the challenges facing our sector, but makes such positive recommendations including innovation in cultural business models and the value of capital investment, we believe this is another good example of what can be achieved with the support of a farsighted local authority who are willing to make that investment. Huge thanks and acknowledgment to London Borough of Waltham Forest Council, and we’ll work hard to realise the return on that investment across the borough. Starting with joyful and memory-making cultural experiences, it will also attract further inward investment, support local growth and regeneration, create 60 new jobs, support local businesses and suppliers, and build international links. We can’t wait to welcome you in.
