This Christmas we are calling on people to recognise signs of emotional abuse and to donate to receive our very special Maya decoration. Today we launched our 2024 Christmas campaign #IseeMaya, by creating a unique decoration Maya who represents all the women who are silenced or vanishing from their social networks and friendship groups due to emotional abuse. ‘Emotional abuse affects one in two women and at least 85% of the women we support’ says Nahar Choudhury, Solace CEO. ‘The lasting impact and trauma of emotional abuse is often overlooked in the context of violence and abuse, but we see firsthand how controlling behaviours such as belittling, silencing and gaslighting can not only be some of the early signs of potential physical and sexual abuse but can be devastating in themselves’. ‘We’d love to see our Maya decoration on trees in offices and homes around the country showing support for women experiencing domestic abuse. After all, we all know Maya. We work with her, we’re friends with her, and many of us are her. The work we do at Solace is life changing and lifesaving and sadly more than two million women are estimated to face violence perpetrated by men each year in an epidemic so serious that police chiefs have recently called it a “national emergency”. Our services include: - Advice, advocacy and support; improving safety, housing, finances and benefits, and health. - Counselling and support groups. - Safe refuge accommodation. - Dedicated support for families, children and young people. - North London Rape Crisis service. - Support for women with drug, alcohol and mental health issues. - Legal advice and representation. We also provide a service for male survivors and perpetrators of domestic violence in some London boroughs.

In this week of Black History Month, we are shining a spotlight on some of the amazing organisations making a huge difference by empowering and educating. The work of these organisations provides a lifeline for many through their support, advocacy, education and training. Southall Black Sisters is led by and for Black and minoritised women, providing holistic, specialist services to some of society’s most marginalised victim-survivors of abuse. Their policy and campaigning work advocates for survivors, challenging institutional racism, sexism and the anti-migrant rhetoric Sistah Space is a community-based non-profit initiative created to bridge the gap in domestic abuse services for African heritage women and girls across the UK. Alongside invaluable support to survivors, they provide antiracist training to enable professionals to better support and empower Black and minoritised women. @FORWARD is an African women-led organisation working to end FGM, child marriage and violence against women & girls. Their work is based on community insights and voices, providing support to survivors and training that raises awareness of cultural sensitivities and preventative measures to protect and support vulnerable women and girls. If you need support, don’t hesitate to get in touch: Southall Black Sisters: 020 8571 0800 / info@southallblacksisters.co.uk Sistah Space: www.sistahspace.org FORWARD: 0208 960 4000 / support@forwarduk.org.uk Solace: 0808 802 5565 / advice@solacewomensaid.org #BlackHistoryMonth #ReclaimingNarratives #EmpowerAndEducate #VAWG #EndVAWG

We’d like to thank the Iceland Foods Charitable Foundation for their generous support of our Christmas campaign and ensuring that Maya is seen this Christmas period. They ordered the Holly Package which means they received our one-of a kind Maya ornaments for their office tree and supported the purchase of a Christmas tree and decorations for one of our refuges. If you’d like to support us this Christmas and help ensure that Maya is seen, order your Maya package using the website details in the link in our bio. #IseeMaya #EndVAWG
