I am honoured to have witnessed two outstanding South Africans, Ruth Leas and His Excellency Jeremiah Nyamane Kingsley Mamabolo, receive the Freedom of the City of London—a powerful symbol of heritage, resilience, and achievement that connects them to the legacy of Nelson Mandela and so many others. I share a few reflections from this memorable day, where tradition met modern influence in the heart of London. It was a privilege to celebrate alongside an inspiring community and to discuss the opportunities and challenges ahead for South Africa on the global stage—from G20 leadership to shifting international landscapes. Join me in honouring Ruth and His Excellency, two incredible leaders who carry the spirit of South Africa with them wherever they go. #SouthAfrica #CityOfLondon #Leadership #TraditionAndProgress #GlobalImpact #FreedomOfTheCity #ProudlySouthAfrican South African Chamber of Commerce UK Juliet Rushent
The City of London Recognises Two Distinguished South Africans with the Freedom of the City of London In celebration of 30 years of South African democracy, the South African Chamber of Commerce UK recently hosted “South Africa in the City,” a series of events promoting South Africa as a prime trade and investment destination. Held at prestigious venues like Mansion House and the Old Bailey, these gatherings showcased South Africa's achievements while strengthening connections with the UK. These events provided a platform for business leaders, investors, and professionals to engage in discussions and explore collaboration opportunities, illustrating the growth potential that exists between South African and UK businesses. A significant honor during this celebration was the awarding of the Freedom of the City of London to two distinguished South Africans—Mrs. Ruth Leas, CEO of Investec Bank, and H.E. Mr. Kingsley Mamabolo, South Africa’s High Commissioner to the UK. This ancient honor recognizes individuals for their exceptional contributions, marking a deep appreciation for their efforts in enhancing ties between the two countries. Mrs. Ruth Leas has been a trailblazer in promoting diversity and inclusion within Investec Bank. Since joining in 1998, she has significantly influenced the organization’s success and is one of the few female CEOs in the FTSE 250 index. Her leadership not only impacts Investec but also inspires a new generation of women in finance. His Excellency Mr. Kingsley Mamabolo has had a distinguished career in diplomacy, representing South Africa in various roles, including as Ambassador to the United Nations. His dedication to promoting international cooperation has enhanced South Africa's global presence. In his current role, Mr. Mamabolo works to strengthen ties between South Africa and the UK. The South African Chamber of Commerce UK (SA Chamber UK) remains dedicated to fostering trade, investment, and cultural connections between South Africa and the UK. As a bilateral Chamber, it serves as a hub for South Africans in the UK, providing a platform for businesses to expand and forge connections within a global network. The Chamber aims to create economic opportunities and facilitate collaboration among businesses in both nations. As the SA Chamber UK approaches its 20th anniversary in 2026, it looks forward to enhancing its role in promoting bilateral relations and advocating for its members' interests. Through the recognition of Mrs. Ruth Leas and His Excellency Mr. Kingsley Mamabolo, the SA Chamber UK honors their contributions and underscores the ongoing relationship between South Africa and the UK. By celebrating these achievements, the Chamber reaffirms its dedication to advancing trade, investment, and cultural ties that benefit both countries and their citizens. We were delighted to host an exclusive Round Table event on Tuesday evening, 29 October 2024, featuring Helen Zille, one of South Africa's most prominent political figures. With an extensive career in South African politics, Helen Zille provided a unique opportunity to hear direct from someone who was part of the team negotiating the formation of the Government of National Unity (GNU), the new coalition government. Zille spoke extensively about the preparation for the Government of National Unity (GNU) and the tough negotiations undertaken prior to the Democratic Alliance (DA) agreeing to enter a power sharing coalition. She highlighted the challenges faced during the negotiation process and the strategies employed to reach a consensus. She emphasized the importance of collaboration and compromise in achieving a stable and effective government. Attendees had the chance to engage directly with Helen Zille in this interactive session, where she addressed the key challenges and opportunities that South Africa faces today and in the future. This event offered an invaluable perspective from one of the country's leading political figures on how South Africa can navigate its future challenges. This event was ideal for professionals and individuals passionate about South African affairs who wished to gain a deeper understanding of the intersection between politics and economics in shaping the country's future.
On the 29th of October, we held an exclusive roundtable event at Simmons & Simmons, London, focused on how UK corporate and philanthropic support can help reshape education in Cape Town, South Africa, creating pathways to employment and driving sustainable change. Christel House International in Cape Town serves as a model for transformation, enrolling children in poverty from age four and supporting them through to employment at 23. Their holistic approach has consistently achieved exceptional outcomes, transforming lives and uplifting communities. This pioneering school, a Top Ten World’s Best Schools Prize finalist, is leading the way in tackling South Africa’s educational challenges. Our inspiring speakers included Lord Peter Hain and Christel House South Africa CEO Adri Marais, who brought decades of advocacy and impactful social change to the discussion. The event was well attended, and the Christel House team engaged with all guests, making valuable connections.
