About us
From rolling hills to bustling market towns, the South Downs National Park's landscapes cover 1,600km2 of breathtaking views and hidden gems. A rich tapestry of wildlife, landscapes, tranquillity and visitor attractions, weave together a story of people and place in harmony. The South Downs National Park Authority (SDNPA) is the organisation responsible for promoting the purposes of the National Park and the interests of the people who live and work within it. There are 15 national parks in the UK, areas designated for special protection because of their spectacular landscapes. Unlike national parks in other countries these are mostly farmed landscapes which support living, working communities as well as being here for everyone to visit and enjoy. As a National Park, the SDNPA has two statutory purposes: Purpose One: To conserve and enhance the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage of the area. Purpose Two: To promote opportunities for the understanding and enjoyment of the special qualities of the Park by the public. Working in partnership with other Local Authorities and other organisations, we also have a duty to seek to foster the economic and social well-being of the local communities within the National Park. A big round of applause to the volunteers helping to remove small birch and conifers from Iron Hill in Liphook. Removing these species is key to maintaining and improving globally-important lowland heath habitats, such as this. #SouthDowns #ReNature #Volunteers

Rangers from across the South Downs National Park joined the Seven Sisters team for a big scrub clearance day. It was a case of many hands and a robo-flail making light work of starting to clear a corridor through thick scrub at Haven Brow. Removing some of this dense scrub will create edge habitats and access for grazing animals; with the aim to allow chalk grassland species to recolonise as part of our long term plans for the Country Park. It was great to see our Rangers making a start on the scrub clearance, but there will be lots more to do with the help of volunteers over the winter. 📷 Sylvia King #SouthDowns #ReNature #NatureRecovery

Thank you to the South Downs Volunteers who recently installed two new picnic benches at the wharf beside the river Cuckmere at Seven Sisters Country Park - a lovely spot to relax, enjoy the wildlife and watch the paddleboarders. Our amazing volunteers really help us to keep Seven Sisters Country Park such a special place. 📷 Sylvia King #SevenSisters #SouthDowns #Volunteers #Volunteering

With the nights now well and truly drawing in, we're celebrating our magical Dark Night Skies. We're kicking off the season with a special event at Alice Holt on 30 October with guided night walks and a star party - fingers crossed for a clear night with plenty to see. Our Astrophotography competition will be returning once again, with entries opening on 4 November. With many having the chance to see the recent aurora over the South Downs, we're expecting to see lots of entries showing-off this rare spectacle. And in February, our ever-popular Dark Skies Festival is back, running from 13 - 23! Full details will be announced closer to the time. 📷 Michael Steven Harris 📍 Cissbury Ring #SouthDowns #NightSky #EmbraceTheDarkness
