To reach Net Zero, annual renewable energy use must increase at 13% per year on average between 2023-2030, twice as fast as the average between 2017-2022, according to the International Energy Agency. The Space Energy Initiative is bringing together government, research and industry in the space and energy sectors to develop and deliver a co-ordinated programme of technology development and demonstration, with a view to launch a Space solar demonstration in the 2040s. New research in solar power in space! ☀️ Loughborough University and University of Cambridge, with funding from UK Space Agency, will collaborate to develop ultra-lightweight solar cells for use in space applications. New ultra-thin and lightweight solar panels, like those being developed in the project, could be key in delivering a future #SpaceBasedSolarPower system. As temperatures rise, we need fresh momentum to tackle #ClimateChange. As reported today in New Scientist, some scientists are warning we are unlikely to keep global temperature rises below 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. That means we need to keep exploring new ideas, solutions and investment to deliver renewable energy more effectively and reduce emissions. That's exactly our intention.
