About us

Space Syntax provides creative expertise in architecture & urban planning. Operating worldwide, we combine global design experience with advanced digital technologies. Our unique modelling tools forecast the social, economic & environmental impacts of development on mobility, land value & health at all scales. We provide creative urban planning and building design expertise in five key areas: STUDIO From individual buildings to entire cities, we create compelling visions of the future that enhance the lives of the people that use them. With over 30 years of global experience, we assemble & lead expert teams, covering all aspects of urban planning & design and building on rigorous. CONSULTING We deliver expert urban planning & design advice at all stages of the project lifecycle: from site assessment & policy review to design evaluation & in-use appraisal. Our focus on people & place adds value to planning & design strategies. We support projects with evidence rich insights that guide decision-takers. TRAINING We train individuals & organisations in the use of the Space Syntax approach: from executive training events to advanced-user courses. Our training packages cover the urban planning & design principles we work to, as well as the computational tools we employ in professional practice. RESEARCH Through in-house research, as well as partnerships with academic institutions worldwide, we investigate the fundamental issues that will shape the future of buildings & urban places. With a focus on the climate emergency, health & social inequalities, we address the questions raised by global practice. DIGITAL We develop digital modelling tools to measure the social, economic & environmental potential of buildings, neighbourhoods & urban regions. Our work addresses the ‘smart cities’ technology challenges of delivering low carbon performance, healthy living & access to opportunities.

As Seb Coe said at the MIPIM launch of Old Trafford, the two most important elements behind the success of regeneration projects are community and connectivity: engaging local people and linking them physically with new development. We’re delighted to have had a place in the team, seeking out the connections that will continue to unite the community and the club. The huge amount of work completed in just a few months is a sign that the ambitious timeline for delivery is achievable.

What role does data-driven design play in shaping the future of our cities and places? This was one of the questions our Director, Anna Rose, answered during a panel discussion on ‘The future of city making - learning from global best practice & benchmark’ at the Oman Pavilion today. Drawing from Space Syntax’s previous work on the urban planning of Duqm, Anna described the importance of data-driven design in creating walkability and avoiding car-dependence. #MIPIM2025 #urbanplanning #cities #benchmarking #Oman #walkability #datadriven Dr Tim Moonen Claire Saeki Stephens Ricardo Valente Paolo Zilli

Following the launch in February of the Bioregional and Space Syntax Net-zero Spatial Planning Tool, here are some thoughts published in the MJ about why we need to make the most of new opportunities to use data and analysis in decision making (https://lnkd.in/e-Dgvb7P).   The key points of the article are that:   - Transport behaviour (and change) is only possible where conditions of location and place create the opportunity for it. - Recent developments in methodologies and tools make it possible to understand how measurable characteristics of location and place relate to the choices people make around travel. - These insights and tools can be used to make sure that decision-making considers these conditions from the earliest stages of planning and design. - They can be used to set realistic targets based on finding places with similar underlying characteristics, as well as identifying the conditions present in the best-performing places. - They can be used to set design briefs and test schemes. - They can also be applied to existing places, to identify where they are missing, and how to mitigate them through alternative approaches.   It's vital to apply these new approaches to reduce transport carbon, and to balance the challenges of housing growth with environmental sustainability. There's more information on the tool here https://lnkd.in/dJvXHh4Q   #NetZero #NetZeroLiving #Sustainability #Planning #Housing

  • Tim Stonor offers advice to first-timers at #MIPIM, as featured in Estates Gazette:   Don’t panic!  MIPIM will seem overwhelming but… Pace yourself.  No one likes a Tuesday evening hooligan. Or even a Wednesday morning crapulant. MIPIM is like Freshers Week for grown ups. Stay the course. Go light.  Under no circumstances accept any printed literature. Ever. Maybe possibly a business card but avoid them if you can. Do the LinkedIn scan thing instead. If you don’t know how then learn NOW. You don’t have to do it all.  And you’re not alone. If you find yourself at a loose end, introduce yourself to a fellow solo. Link friends to others. Invite in the lonely-looking person just behind them. After all, it could be you. And they, like you, are probably a gem.   https://lnkd.in/eu-dA3dY #MIPIM2025

  • EVENT | MIPIM panel discussion 12th March at 16:00-16:45 GMT+1 at UK Hub (Palais 1) Prof Yolande Barnes, Non-executive Director, Space Syntax; Professor of Real Estate, The Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction, University College London; Chair, The Bartlett Real Estate Institute, University College London, will be taking part in the ‘Funding tomorrow's housing market: Debating investment opportunities, the role of Government and evolving product types in residential’ panel discussion at MIPIM. This session will dig deep into the following questions: Does the UK housing challenge need to be addressed from the supply or demand side – or both at once? What policy interventions would be most helpful on either side of the equation? What are the barriers or deterrents for new private sector builders or investors who could provide much-needed supply? How can we solve them? Where does the state come in? Is the new Labour government’s call for a generational increase in social/affordable housing a welcome one? What are the best models for state-backed or public-sector housing supply? How should city leaders optimise housing regulation, investment and institutional reform? What’s the latest on modern methods of construction, build-to-rent, multifamily residential, student and senior living trends in the UK? What new formats, designs, tenures and choices for housing can make a real difference? Which other countries provide the best examples for how to tackle the UK’s housing issues? Learn more about this session here: https://lnkd.in/gf4ca4KR #MIPIM2025

The City of London Corporation has revealed new images about the incremental extension of its pedestrian network through the creation of new alleyways—a process that has delivered a more connected, people-friendly urban environment. We are happy to have helped: first, in being a member of the design teams that are creating so many of these changes and lately, in mapping these changes for the City.   The Space Syntax ‘City of London Pedestrian Movement Model’ factors in the combined effects of spatial connectivity, transport infrastructure and land use attraction, providing a powerful demonstration of how future developments will impact pedestrian flows. These insights help project teams, policymakers and stakeholders make informed decisions to create better-connected, more vibrant urban places.   The quality of our public spaces matters more now than ever. Thoughtful design and evidence-based planning can shape a more walkable, vibrant, and inclusive city for all.  City of London news release: https://lnkd.in/ePbxK_Mr   #UrbanDesign #PublicRealm #PedestrianMovement #CityofLondon #SpaceSyntax Gwyn Richards

Net-zero Spatial Planning Tool launch I'm really pleased to have helped launch the Net-zero Spatial Planning Tool with Bioregional this morning. This was a great project to work on, addressing a major challenge, really collaborative working, and supported by the Innovate UK Net Zero Living Programme. The tool integrates Space Syntax' Transport Carbon model, which was developed from hundreds of thousands of data points. It combines spatial, socio-economic and demographic factors, to explain how location and place affect the way people move around, the distances they travel, and how much carbon will be generated by additional housing. This can quickly become a deep technical discussion, and the value of the tool is that it provides a simple interface to help users understand the carbon impacts of housing allocation at a very early stage of planning. There's more information on the tool here https://lnkd.in/dJvXHh4Q, if you'd like to find out how it can be used please get in touch with me, Lewis Knight, Jo Mortensen or Valentina Marin Maureira. #NetZero #NetZeroLiving #Decarbonisation #Sustainability #Planning #Housing
