HERE'S SIX FORCES shaping the new world of #wealth – snippets from my address at the Guernsey Finance Private Wealth Forum (as a warm-up act for the impressive Steven Bartlett). Spear's Magazine was a proud media partner. 💰 Political/tax turmoil: 2024 has been a record year for elections with all voters in 76 countries having the chance to go to the ballot box. New governments mean new tax regimes. 📍 New capitals of capital: with polarising attitudes to wealth and wealthy people, some countries and jurisdictions are emerging as new hubs for private wealth. 7 out of the top 10 cities for centimillionaire growth are in Asia or the Middle East. 👩🚀 The world’s shifting centre of gravity: the value of goods and services going between Asia and the Middle East is set to double to almost $2 trillion between 2022 and 2035.  🎁 The Great Wealth Transfer: the total value could be $100 trillion, but in the next 10 years alone we will see $31 trillion passed on by people with $5m or more. Almost HALF of this will come from centimillionaires. 🧑🧒🧒 The true, nuanced nature of the next-gen cohort: did you know the share of private jet buyers under 45 has been rising for some time? 🤷♀️ Gen-Z doubts – as to whether they’re the right fit to run the family business. 🌍 It all adds up to make the world of wealth increasingly diffuse and even more international than it is already. That’s creating threats and risks, but opportunities too... ** Thanks to those who have asked for the slides – if you'd like to receive the presentation with the charts and sources, please just comment 'Charts' below.

Is the new generation of wealth creators receiving sufficient financial support? A Goldman Sachs Research report revealed that there are at least 50 million economically consequential creators worldwide, contributing to the total addressable market of the creator economy of $480 billion. 'Their income may be generated from ad revenue or brand partnerships instead of inheritances and property sales, but the new generation of wealth creators is no less in need of sound advice and a network of trusted providers to guide them through proper financial and estate planning,' says Kate Finlayson, Group Chief Commercial Officer, Oak Group. In an article for Guernsey Finance, Kate explores how providers can get to grips with these novel wealth generators. Read here: https://buff.ly/3ZThiVb #PartnerContent

Entrepreneurs should make philanthropy part of their company’s DNA, argues James Reed CBE, chairman and CEO of Reed, in an exclusive column for Spear's. Evidence shows that Philanthropy Companies – or ‘PhilCos’ – such as Ikea and Lego enjoy advantages over their competitors, from staff turnover and morale to longevity. 'We want to build a new community of PhilCos here in the UK, with at least 10 per cent of their shareholding held for charitable purposes, recognised with a new PhilCo hallmark,' he writes. The policy upheaval following the change of government in July has ushered in an uncertain era for UHNWs based in the UK. Many have revisited their affairs as the Government gets ready to replace the remittance basis regime and introduce the new foreign income and gains (FIG) regime from next year, just as others have considered whether the possibility of rising capital gains tax rates could lead to an expensive liquidity event as a UK resident. Yet the political change could provide a valuable ‘window of opportunity’ for UHNWs to revisit the way they plan their financial affairs. Now is the time to have conversations around wealth planning and succession in family businesses that can give UHNW clients a long-term perspective, say Jeremy Franks, HSBC Global Private Banking’s head of wealth planning and advisory for the UK and EMEA, and Karina C., HSBC’s managing director for wealth planning. The Spear's Power List 2024 is OUT NOW. This definitive index acknowledges the 100 most influential people in the world of private wealth. In contrast to our other indices and rankings that focus on expert advisers and specialist service providers, the Power List showcases the figures who wield power behind the scenes, and whose everyday work is not based on client relationships. If the list is indicative of anything, it is the rapid pace of change at the top: 42 of our 100 from 2023 have been displaced in the rankings by new entrants. Congratulations to everyone featured. AI is getting better and better, but it's still a long way from doing what the artist behind the latest cover of Spear's Magazine can do. (Isn't it?) Anyone who knows a little bit about graphic design will understand why art director Andrew Cowan and I were pretty excited when Noma Bar agreed to work with us on an illustration. He didn't disappoint. This was just one of several brilliant concepts he came up with to communicate the central idea behind Robert Jackman's story about the nightmare that can unfold when a principal's trusted adviser turns against them. To read the full story, which includes cautionary tales concerning rogue advisers to Prince Albert of Monaco, Eric Schmidt, Liliane Bettencourt and Kendalle Getty, along with commentary from Kedge Martin.
