Funding medical research around the world to develop effective treatments for paralysis caused by spinal cord injury.

About us

Spinal Research is the UK’s leading charity funding research to develop reliable and effective treatments for spinal cord injury. Every day, three people in the UK and Ireland are paralysed following a traumatic injury to their spinal cord. Paralysis means more than not being able to walk – it also affects other vital functions such as bladder and bowel control, blood pressure, breathing. It affects simple every day tasks such as drinking, eating. It can devastate lives. “Research could help nerves regenerate. It could help me to use my fingers so I could hold a fork somehow and eat independently.” Spinal Research raises money to fund research into clinical treatments as well as vital basic science research. We fund projects across the UK, and internationally, developed by leading neuroscientists in the field. We are determined to see treatments successful in the lab translate to real healthcare environments where they can benefit people. We believe this can be brought about by collaboration and funding the best research.

Meet Dr. Shin-Yi (Chloe) Chiou – Pioneering Rehabilitation Research In our latest magazine, we're thrilled to feature Dr. Shin-Yi (Chloe) Chiou, a dedicated researcher at the University of Birmingham. Combining her passion for research, rehabilitation, and patient care, Chloe is working tirelessly to restore trunk function for those with spinal cord injuries. She's developing accessible, patient-led rehabilitation programs that use the upper body to enhance trunk motor control. One exciting technique she's exploring involves an arm crank hand cycle paired with a "Peloton-style" virtual experience, making at-home exercise more engaging and effective. Discover how Chloe's innovative work is making a real difference in the lives of people with spinal cord injuries. You can read this article and much more in our magazine. Link below. PhD Student at King’s College London

🎉 This October marks the start of an exciting new chapter in my academic journey! I am thrilled to announce that I am officially starting my PhD at King's College London, where I will be joining the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience. I am incredibly grateful to Spinal Research for funding this studentship and making this opportunity possible. 🧠 My research will focus on spinal cord injury, specifically the recovery of the respiratory motor system. This is truly a dream come true, and I am eager to explore the neurobiology behind these injuries and investigate potential new therapies that could enhance recovery and improve the lives of those affected. My academic journey has been far from linear, but incredibly rewarding. After struggling with my A-Levels, I was unsure of my academic path. However, I persevered and pursued a BSc in Biomedical Science at the University of Kent. With the guidance of a fantastic academic tutor - Ben Goult, I found my footing and earned a First Class degree. This achievement reassured me that my career aspirations where possible and so I went on to complete an MSc in Translational Neuroscience at Imperial College London. During my time there, I conducted a translational research project that deepened my passion for cellular and molecular neuroscience. Encouraged by a wonderful post-doc - Kjara Sophia Pilch, PhD and Barnes lab, I decided to take the leap and pursue a PhD. This journey has shaped me not only as a scientist but also as a person. I look forward to the challenges and discoveries ahead! Here’s to the next chapter! 🚀
