Today, 23rd August, UNESCO recognises the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition. On the night of August 22-23, 1791, an uprising began in Saint Domingue (now Haiti) that played a crucial role in ending the transatlantic slave trade. This day has continued to be marked to honour the memory of this tragedy and its abolition. On this day we are encouraged to reflect on the historical causes, methods, and consequences of the slave trade and enslavement. It also prompts us to analyse the interactions it created between Africa, Europe, the Americas, and the Caribbean. However, we must not forget that slavery still exists today in various forms. Modern slavery affects over 40 million people worldwide, including forced labour, human trafficking, and child exploitation. These injustices demand our attention and action. Let us use this day to remember, reflect, and continue the work towards ending all forms of slavery, striving for a more just and inclusive world. #InternationalDay #RememberingHistory #AbolitionOfSlavery #EndModernSlavery #HumanRights

We focus on practical, implementable strategies with an intersectional approach. These tools and solutions help foster consistent, positive movement toward a more inclusive space for everyone involved. We work with arts organisations to build a robust long-term strategic plan to maintain and elevate positive progress and help organisational leaders remove barriers to better support their team. We give practical support by creating, delivering, and implementing actionable, measurable training plans tailored to the organisation’s goals and needs. We offer guidance, validation, and understanding to individuals who are experiencing discrimination and providing tools to navigate difficult, even unacceptable, situations.

💬 Are These Policies Enough to Advance Women’s Equality? 💬 The new Labour government has outlined several key policies aimed at promoting women’s equality. Here’s a snapshot: A plan to ‘make work pay’ Strengthening rights to equal pay Protections from maternity and menopause discrimination and sexual harassment Reducing the gender pay gap Supporting the Equality Act’s rights and protections for single-sex exceptions These are ambitious and important steps, but are they sufficient to achieve real change? 🤔 We explore this further in our blog on Labour’s Respect and Equality for All Commitments here: https://buff.ly/4fxaGB8 I’d love to hear your thoughts, how can we ensure these policies are effectively implemented and make a tangible difference for women in the workplace? What additional measures might be needed? #hr #training #education #onlinetraining #learning #inclusion #equity #development

How do we ensure the arts are equitable, diverse and inclusive? This is a big question and one that has sharper focus due to the Arts Council England’s investment principles. Our budgets are tight and our capacity is tighter. We know we need to address the issues, but where do we begin? You can start by joining this virtual programme which will provide you with input from our inclusion experts and will allow you to engage in conversation and reflect on your organisation’s challenges and performance. In the spirit of inclusion, sessions will be recorded and shared with cohort members following the sessions so you don’t miss out if you can’t attend or need to go back and rewatch it. You will also benefit from the slides. We will use all of the days in the week so as not to disadvantage people who work part-time. Find out more about the course here: https://buff.ly/4cv5uuQ

We're listening: Legacy podcast https://buff.ly/4diLQDi we have found very interesting. Afua Hirsch and Peter Frankopan focus on some key historical features exploring their cultural and global impact. They have covered figures such as Nina Simone, Margaret Thatcher and Alan Turing. Their next key figure is the legend of Bob Marley exploring his complex character and political impact through his music. What has been really lovely about this podcast, is learning more about the depth of these figures, and relating to the theme of change, understanding how they have changed the face of the world or the sector they specialise in, or changing our understanding of the person behind the persona has been refreshing and enlightening. #equitydiversityinclusion #arts #artsandculture #leadership #inclusionleadership #inclusionmatters #diversity #inclusion #equity #development

Have you read our recent blog post yet? We delve into Labour's Equality for All Commitments. Read the full blog here: https://buff.ly/4fxaGB8 One of the key areas of the commitments detailed in their manifesto was the Race and Equality Act. We have pulled out the key changes below: Race Equality Act enshrined in law 1. The full right to equal pay for ‘Black, Asian and other ethnic minority people’ 2. Strengthen protections against dual discrimination 3. Root out other racial inequalities 4. Reverse the decision to downgrade the monitoring of antisemitic and Islamophobic hate 5. Introducing ethnicity pay gap reporting for large employers What are your thoughts on these changes? We found it disappointing that Labour has clung to fairly outdated terminology still referring to ‘other minority people’ and 'dual discrimination' This could have been improved by simply referring to intersectionality or ‘multiple discriminations’ rather than dual. Those of us who work in this space recognise that often people will have multiple factors linked to their identities which provide barriers to a person thriving and progressing as they would like. Does your organisation find it a challenge to find the right language that is inclusive? Following the recent racist and Islamophobic riots, you might be reflecting on to what extent your organisation is antiracist and anti- Islamophobic. We can help.
