To make a seriously ill child in hospital laugh and smile like this really does make everything we do worthwhile. ❤️ Thank you to everyone for making our work possible. Every day our entertainers visit children and young people in hospital wards, helping to spread smiles and distract from the worries of being in hospital. To find out more about our work, please visit our website at spreadasmile.org and see how you or your company can get involved and help us reach even more seriously ill children and young people when they need us most. Spread a Smile
Hospitals and Health Care
To distract seriously ill children from the monotony of long hospital stays by spreading joy and laughter.
About us
Spread a Smile is dedicated to improving the time spent by seriously ill children in hospital. We provide entertainers for seriously ill children and teenagers who are in hospital, often for prolonged periods of time, with life limiting conditions including cancer and heart, lung and kidney-related illnesses. We take entertainers such as fairies, pirates, children’s characters, musicians, magicians, singers, face painters and poets into paediatric wards, to activity centres and to children’s parties in Great Ormond Street Hospital, University College Hospital, The Royal London Hospital, St Mary's Hospital, The Evelina, Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, King's College Hospital, The Royal Marsden and Noah's Ark Children's Hospice. Our aim is to divert their attention away from their treatment, stimulate their minds and to alleviate the boredom and monotony associated with sustained hospital stays. We also extend this work to the siblings of these children, as they are deeply affected by the illness of their sister or brother. There are potential additional benefits to our work. Guided by an advisory team of medical practitioners, we entertain thousands of children each year. There is emerging evidence to show that ‘laughter is the best medicine’ as it may help to strengthen the immune system, diminish pain and decrease levels of stress.

Sit back and enjoy a story with us! 📚 Spread a Smile's professional story tellers, spend time with children in hospital exploring the magic of their imagination. As you can see, it is a really lovely way of engaging with young people, giving them control over what happens in that moment and how their narrative plays out. It is beautiful to watch and beautiful for the child and their family to be part of. 🥰 #MondayMotivation #SpreadaSmile #StoryTelling #Stories #EntertainmentinHospital #NHS

After five brilliant years as a Spread a Smile therapy dog, Chocco, the standard poodle is retiring. 🐕 Chocco began his role with the charity back in 2019, taking over from his owner Howard’s first therapy dog, Chilli. Howard said: “Chocco is the perfect therapy dog – chilled out and stoic – standing or sitting calmly whilst people stroke and cuddle him. His amazing hair is always a huge draw for patients, parents and hospital staff alike and he always receives lots of compliments about his flowing locks.” Chocco and Chilli’s legacy will be carried on by Howard’s third therapy dog, Cobi – also a standard poodle. “Cobi is three years old, has bright white eyes and black velvety hair, sporting a really cool rockstar hairstyle. Cobi loves walks, eating anything and play fighting with Chocco. He is also a ‘ball thief’ and will steal any ball he can lay his paws on.” Welcome to the team Cobi and a huge thank you to Chocco for being so brilliant and spreading so many smiles. 🥰 Meet Chocco and Cobi via the link below and you can find out about sponsoring one of our therapy dogs, by emailing Lucy Keith at lucykeith@spreadasmile.org 🔗https://bit.ly/3ZLgOAs #SpreadaSmile #TherapyDog #DogsofInstragram #Poodle #StandardPoodle
