We’ve opened our first Irish public EV charging hub in Mullingar! 🚗🔌 Peter Burke, the Minister for Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment, officially opened our first ultra-rapid electric vehicle (EV) charging hub in Ireland. The launch of the 10-bay facility located just off the M4 at Lough Sheever Corporate Park in Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, is part of our plans to build 300 ultra-rapid EV charging hubs powered by traceable, renewable energy in the Ireland and the UK in the next five years with several sites already open and more under construction. Each ultra-rapid bay has charging capabilities of up to 150 kilowatts (kW), sufficient to deliver 12.5 kms of range per minute of charging! 🗣️ Peter Burke, the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, said: “To reduce transport emissions and meet our climate targets, the Government is committed to promoting and incentivising the use of EVs. Private investment like this is essential to grow the network with the pace and scale required to meet Ireland’s ambitious targets. I am delighted SSE has selected Mullingar as the location of their first EV charging Hub in Ireland. I have no doubt that businesses in the region with eHGVs, as well as members of the public, will benefit from this innovative site.”

Did you know we run an efficient taxi service for salmon in the River Tirry! 🐟 We spoke to SSE Renewables' Ross Glover, Fisheries Biologist and Hydro Operations Environment Manager, Andy Jacobs at the River Tirry near our Shin Hydro scheme to find out more about the “trap and truck” project which involves trapping smolts when making their migration towards sea, tagging them and then transporting them beyond the dam, ensuring we optimise the number of smolts that pass downstream. Watch the full video on YouTube to learn more about the process and how we’re going above and beyond to protect natural resources and the hashtag#environment where we operate. ⬇️

What does a clean energy system actually look like? 💭 What technologies are involved, and how can we ensure security of supply when relying so heavily on renewables? On a recent episode of the #CleanEnergyPod we were joined by Michael Grubb, Professor of Energy and Climate Change at the University College London (UCL), who explains exactly what a clean energy system would look like. We also discussed whether we are moving fast enough to meet our 2030 climate change targets and what Michael thinks needs to be done in UK, and around the world to reach net zero. 🎧 Listen to the full episode on your favourite podcast streaming service or via the YouTube link in the comments below 🔗⬇️

Exploratory tunnelling at the site of what would be the UK’s first large-scale pumped storage scheme to be developed in 40 years is now complete. The completion of a 1.2km long exploratory tunnel is the latest milestone in our ongoing development of our landmark Coire Glas project in the Scottish Highlands. Located at Loch Lochy in the Great Glen, the proposed Coire Glas project would have an installed capacity of 1,300MW and be capable of delivering 30GWh of long duration electricity storage – enough to be able to provide firm, flexible renewable power for three million British homes for up to 24 hours non-stop.
