This is Jack and he is a very busy man! Not only is he a well loved volunteer at one of our retail shops, he is known for being an actor, a gymnast and a dressage competitor. He also became Britain's first male supermodel with Down's syndrome after a photoshoot with world-famous photographer Rankin, celebrating body positivity and diversity. He was asked to join our volunteer family after he came into a shop in Grimsby to buy some new furniture for his bedroom. Vickie, Wilton Road Retail Manager, said: "He came in looking for a new bed and I just gravitated towards him. Almost immediately after meeting him I thought, yup! I need him as a volunteer." Jack said: "I was scouted by a model agency and scouted again by St Andrew's Hospice! I love it here, I enjoy speaking to everyone, coming in and hearing their stories too. I've learned so much since starting. Vickie asked me to go onto a till and has taught me all about cash, she's just so lovely. I struggle with maths and I didn't know anything about physical money, but now I know what different coins look like and that 2 pound coins equal £2!" Julia, Jack's mum, added: "He has become so independent since working here. I've noticed that he picks up on things that need doing around the house and gained more confidence in himself that he can do things on his own, and I'm certain it's because of the work he does here in the shop. It's nice seeing him so happy and enjoying what he's doing. "If you have a disability and want to try volunteering, I'd really urge you to just give it a go. The staff have been so lovely and help with any extra support or adjustments Jack may need. It's a safe environment here to come and learn, I have no worries about leaving him here because I know he is being treated properly and learning new things." We were delighted to welcome volunteers from some of the Hatcliffe Holdings branches of McDonald's into our gardens. Volunteers from Birchin Way, Victoria Street and Grimsby Road spent a day each helping out our dedicated gardening volunteers, lending a hand to everything from painting fences to weeding and digging! The Franchisee from Hatcliffe Holdings said, “Hatcliffe Holdings t/a McDonald’s have had a close association for several years and we are delighted to continue this relationship through our volunteer programme. “It's important to us to give back to the communities in which we work and this has been a very rewarding experience. “St Andrew's Hospice does incredible work supporting both young and old people who have life limiting conditions, we’re proud to have an association together with them.” One volunteer also commented, “it’s nice to do something worthwhile. I’ll be going home with a skip in my step!” St Andrew’s Hospice really appreciate the hard work and support, thank you. If you would like to get involved in a corporate volunteer day, please contact our Volunteer Team on sah.voltuneers@nhs.net
