Hospice UK is the national champion for hospices, fighting to make sure hospice care is there for all who need it, for now and forever. It represents the community of more than 200 hospices across the UK. It fights to make sure hospices are able to deliver the best, most personalised care, and to make sure hospices can thrive today and into the future. We're excited to be supporting the Hospice UK Garden of Compassion at the RHS Chelsea 2025. 💚 Celebrating life, the connections we share with each other, and the natural world that we are all a part of, the garden, designed by Thomas Hoblyn, draws on the spirit of Mediterranean landscapes, showing how thoughtfully designed spaces can play a crucial role in providing comfort and calm at the end of life. The end result is a restorative sanctuary that is fully accessible to a wheelchair or hospice bed, creating a space that feels as nurturing as it is beautiful. Following the show, the garden will be relocated to St Cuthbert's Hospice in Durham, a location which has inspired the garden’s design. "It’s vital that we continue to champion the incredible contributions of women past and present and ensure their voices are heard. By recognising and sharing these stories, we inspire future generations to step forward, challenge barriers, and continue the progress towards true equality.” 🗣 Last week, North East businesses gathered at the Grand Hotel Gosforth Park to celebrate ahead of #InternationalWomensDay, embracing this year’s theme: #AccelerateAction. The event, in support of St Cuthbert's Hospice, featured inspiring talks from prominent businesswomen who shared their personal journeys and challenges. The discussions that followed focused on practical steps local businesses can take to foster gender equity and create more inclusive workplace cultures. Smarter routes, bigger impact: Increasing efficiency one Christmas tree at a time🎄 We were honoured to work with St Cuthbert's Hospice last year and help them to improve their Christmas tree collection process. This allowed them to focus on the job at hand and raise even more money for an incredible cause. Here's how we helped... To read the full article click the link below https://bit.ly/4iAStmQ

  • Statement on release of Government funding for Hospice Sector The Government has confirmed the release of £25 million for upgrades and refurbishments for hospices across England. ·       An additional £75 million will be available from April as part of the investment in hospices. ·       The funding will modernise facilities, improve IT systems and ensure patients receive the highest quality care.  Paul Marriott Chief Executive at St Cuthbert’s Hospice, Durham, said: “Yesterday's funding announcement from the Government is welcome; it recognises the important role hospices like St Cuthbert’s play in providing vital palliative and end of life care for patients and families in their local communities. However, the funding is restricted to spending on projects like improving buildings, patient accommodation and equipment rather than helping to fund our day-to-day running costs.” “We still face the same financial pressures that forced us to make redundancies in January in a bid to reduce our deficit and put our finances back on a sustainable footing. Unfortunately, this announcement won't help us to close the gap in our finances. We will put this additional money to immediate good use and aim to be as creative as possible to ensure the benefits are maximised. A sustainable, transparent funding model remains essential, and we will continue to push for this.”

  • The inspiration for one of the stories in the ‘This is Hospice Care’ TV advert launched last week came from a real life story here at St Cuthbert’s. In the advert, a man can be seen attending a Hospice for physiotherapy and then leaving on a motorbike. That inspiration came from Mark Stanger. Mark was 32 when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2019. He had experienced symptoms for up to six months prior, but unfortunately had been misdiagnosed. It was only after paying privately for a scan that doctors were able to find a large tumour and refer him for treatment. Mark was later told that treatment was not an option and nothing more could be done. He was referred to St Cuthbert’s Hospice and spent months receiving treatment, care and support from us until August 2019 when he sadly died. Mark’s wife Emma has kindly shared their real life story in the hope of not only opening up Hospice care to others who may need it, but to also encourage people to think about leaving a gift in their will to the Hospice that gave them time, memories, care and comfort. Today would have been Mark & Emma’s 6th Wedding Anniversary. “If it wasn’t for the help and support of St Cuthbert’s Hospice we wouldn’t have been able to get married at all or to make so many precious memories before he died. Mark and I had known each other pretty much all of our lives. A year before we got together, he told me he would marry me one day. I couldn’t be more grateful to the Hospice for making that a reality. Without their support in getting Mark’s symptoms under control we simply couldn’t have done it. He didn’t think he would make it to the wedding day. You’d never know but on our Wedding Day Mark had a syringe driver in for pain management.” “As soon as we walked through the door we were all looked after so well. We were able to come and go. Mark would be able to come in, get his pain under control and then go out on his motorbike or quad later that day if he wanted to. He could be a Dad, he could go and pick our daughter up from nursery. People just don’t expect that for someone receiving Hospice care.” Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/e6JMX2EG #ThisIsHospiceCare Hospice UK

  • At St Cuthbert's Hospice, we witness the power of compassionate care every single day. It’s uncertainty and certainty, brave faces and shedding tears. It’s short days and long nights. Living for now with the weight of tomorrow. But it’s also love, life and celebration. It’s going the extra mile, doing away with convention and remembering what really matters 💚 This week sees the launch of a brand new campaign, where we have come together with 143 hospices across England, Scotland and Wales to change perceptions of hospice care and highlight the vital importance of gifts in wills. You'll be able to see this advert on multiple channels for the next two weeks. Do let us know if you spot it! Without gifts in wills we couldn't go the extra mile or do all of the wonderful things that makes moments matter. Learn how you can make a lasting difference: https://lnkd.in/ezaMmcHG

  • We couldn't end this week without sharing some stories from the incredible visit we had from Joe Wicks The Body Coach. He joined us in Durham as part of his workplace tour after we applied last summer for him to come. We feel so lucky to have been selected from over 10,000 applications! Joe spent time doing a 30min workout with staff and volunteers, and chatted with us about all things exercise, diet, nutrition and the importance of sleep. He spoke with each and every person he met. He also spent time with our Strength & Balance group for people in our community with a life-limiting illness. Joe joined in their weekly workout where they do different exercises to improve their fitness levels to help with daily activities. One of the most precious interactions on the day was with patient Mercedes. Joe was introduced and in his typical genuine style said 'Oh what a beautiful name'. Mercedes then told Joe she was from Ecuador. To our utter amazement, Joe began speaking fluent Spanish to Mercedes. To witness the joy and delight on her face to hear her own mother tongue was simply incredible. They chatted about Ecuador and places Joe had visited, and his recent appearance on Dragon's Den. Our nurse Colleen said: “Mercedes has been an absolute pleasure to care for, she is so lovely and to have this magic moment for her is truly wonderful. That’s what we try to do every day for people at our Hospice. To do the unexpected and go the extra mile.” All our Chief Executive Paul Marriott rounded off the day by saying: “We were delighted to welcome Joe to the Hospice. Covid taught us that looking after ourselves and our wellbeing is an important part of coping with difficult times. Our Hospice has had its own difficult challenges in recent months where we have been forced make cuts to staffing provision and services, so it is great to have this opportunity to focus on the wellbeing of our staff and volunteers. It’s an important part of keeping up our resilience for the benefit of those who use our services. Joe’s visit was a lift for us all and especially for those who access our care who were able to meet with him.”
