Steer sustainability stories—Earth Hour 2025. As we prepare for Earth Hour on Saturday (22 March), we’re inspired by real sustainability stories from our colleagues around the globe. These stories prove that even small, everyday actions can create a significant collective impact. In North America, Melina Lasley from our San Diego office shows us that every sustainable action counts—whether she’s commuting by e-bike or bus, or using a shopping wagon to avoid disposable bags. In New York, Pippa Gallagher embraces energy-efficient habits and cuts down on single-use plastics, while Laura Granada-Hincapie in Vancouver champions sustainable commuting by walking, cycling, and teaching her daughter the value of resource mindfulness. In Latin America, our Bogotá team is making a real difference. Carolina Toro Pérez leads by example with cycling as a practical, emission-free alternative in a congested city. María Camila Rubio Pérez lives a more mindful life by relying on her bike, buying locally, and reducing waste, and in Mexico, Guillermo Fragoso Ovando is committed to lowering his carbon footprint through digital efficiency and responsible resource use. In Europe, Shivali Mathur in Hemel Hempstead is driving the low-carbon transition through decarbonisation strategies and energy efficiency. In London, Rosie Strong combines her background in botany with personal initiatives like earning a carbon literacy certification and adopting a plant-based lifestyle, while Linda Steele also in London is making mindful choices by buying less new clothing and shopping second-hand. In Manchester, Elaine Meskhi challenges electric vehicle myths while engaging as a STEM ambassador. And our Amberside Advisors team even celebrated by switching off lights for one hour on 19 March. In India, Shravya Yerram-Garuda, shared how sustainability became a personal journey after having her first child. What began as a buzzword transformed into a way of life for her, inspiring informed choices in food, clothing, and consumer behaviour. Proudly, she embraces slow fashion by wearing a naturally dyed, hand-woven 'Tangalia' saree from Gujarat—a testament to sustainable practices that go beyond trends. These stories remind us that sustainability isn’t just about large-scale initiatives—it starts with the choices we make every day. As we mark Earth Hour 2025, let’s celebrate our collective efforts and continue to inspire one another to build a greener future together. #sustainability #earthhour #greenerfuture #wearesteer Carolina Toro Pérez photo by Federico Fonseca.

🚴♀️ Breaking down barriers: How do we encourage more women to cycle? Yesterday, we brought together leading researchers and practitioners for a powerful discussion on the barriers preventing more women from cycling—and what we can do to change that. Our latest Steer x Active Travel Academy: Research Talks webinar for International Women’s Day #AccelerateAction explored how gender disparities in cycling emerge from childhood and persist into adulthood. Key insights from our speakers: ➡️ Teenage girls are 10 times less likely to cycle to school than boys. Dr Robert Egan, Trinity College Dublin, shared how social norms shape cycling as a “boys’ activity,” creating long-term gender imbalances in transport choices. ➡️ Most cycling infrastructure ignores the needs of parents and caregivers. Dr Dawn Rahman, Integrated Transport Planning, highlighted how barriers, poor connectivity, and a lack of safe cycleways make everyday trips difficult for those cycling with children. ➡️ Nearly a quarter of cycleways feel unsafe after dark. Kate Bartlett, Active Travel Academy, revealed how social safety concerns—poor lighting, isolated routes, and lack of passive surveillance—stop many women from cycling. What needs to change? ✔️ Safe, well-lit, and connected routes designed for real-life journeys. ✔️ Infrastructure that works for all cyclists, including cargo bikes and child trailers. ✔️ Confidence-building measures—affordable cycle training and tackling harassment. ✔️ Gender-inclusive planning as the default, not an afterthought. 📺 Missed the session? Watch the recording here: https://lnkd.in/ePEk_GXi Next in the series: Clutter and compliance: Improving scooter parking interventions and perceptions, Thu 27 Mar, 18:00-18:45 (UTC). Join Alia (Verloes) Eaton, Steer, and Nicholas J. Klein, Cornell University, as they share research-backed solutions to improve compliance and reduce street clutter.
