The European winter transfer window slammed shut on Monday, setting the stage for an exciting finish to the season across the Premier League and EFL. With title races, European spots, relegation battles, and promotion hopes all intensifying, clubs made their final moves to strengthen their squads Historically a tough window to negotiate, this year saw Premier League clubs spend around £370m, a rise from the £100m spent last year. Manchester City led the way, spending nearly as much as the other 19 clubs combined. Notably, the average age of players signed for a fee in the Premier League was just 20.5 years—a clear shift toward investing in young talent. In the EFL, Burnley strengthened their squad in pursuit of an immediate Premier League return, while relegation-threatened clubs like Hull, Luton, Plymouth, and Portsmouth were active in a bid to secure survival. In League One, Wrexham continued their ambitious rise by making key signings, including Sam Smith (£2m from Reading) and Jay Rodriguez (undisclosed fee from Burnley), as they push for promotion. The Deloitte 2025 Football Money League report was released yesterday, sharing insight into the evolving business of football. ⚽ 🏟️ 💰 Here are the top three takeaways from this year’s findings: Real Madrid Lead the Way Real Madrid have secured the top spot, becoming the first ever football club to generate over €1bn in revenue in a single season. A true reflection of their global appeal and commercial strategy. €11.2bn in Combined Revenues The top 20 clubs generated a record €11.2bn, fueled by strong performances across match-day, commercial, and broadcast income. However, Deloitte are seeing broadcast revenues plateau, which means clubs must innovate to sustain growth. Women’s Football Reaches New Heights FC Barcelona Femení leads the pack, but the big story is that the combined revenues of the top 15 women’s clubs have surpassed €100 million, growing by an impressive 35% year-on-year to €117 million. A significant milestone for women’s football and a sign of continued growth and investment in the women’s game. The landscape of football finance is rapidly evolving, with new challenges and opportunities emerging.
