About us

The Science and Technology Facilities Council is keeping the UK at the forefront of international science and tackling some of the most significant challenges facing society such as meeting our future energy needs, monitoring and understanding climate change, and global security. The Council has a broad science portfolio and works with the academic and industrial communities to share its expertise in materials science, space and ground-based astronomy technologies, laser science, microelectronics, wafer scale manufacturing, particle and nuclear physics, alternative energy production, radio communications and radar. STFC has 5 main UK sites: Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL), Daresbury Laboratory (DL), UK Astronomy Technology Centre (UKATC), Chilbolton Observatory and Boulby Underground Laboratory. STFC operates or hosts world class experimental facilities including: • In the UK; ISIS Neutron and Muon Source, the Central Laser Facility and RAL Space. STFC is also the majority shareholder in Diamond Light Source Ltd. • Overseas; telescopes on La Palma and Hawaii STFC enables UK researchers to access leading international science facilities by funding membership of international bodies including European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN), the Institut Laue Langevin (ILL), European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) and the European Southern Observatory (ESO). STFC is one of seven publicly-funded research councils and is part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). It is an independent, non-departmental public body of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).

Had a fantastic time at a unique inaugural career fair session of the 22nd STFC Nuclear Physics Summer School in Durham, where Nuclear Physics PhDs from various industries shared insights on non-academic career pathways. I found it especially interesting being a theoretical nuclear physicist. Excellent organization by David Sharp and Rachel Montgomery. #NPSS24

From innovative medical treatments to fundamental physics, the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and CERN have a track record of doing ground-breaking research together 🤝 The science on show yesterday was a great demonstration of how UK researchers can maximise the impact of their skills and expertise through the UK's involvement in CERN. #UKatCERN #CERN70

We're kicking off a day of presentations, accompanied by delegates from CERN, with a look into the cutting-edge collaboration between CERN-MEDICIS and NPL in revolutionising nuclear medicine. Our principal scientist Sean Collins joins Thierry Stora, leader of CERN-MEDICIS, to talk about their pivotal role in the Horizon 2020 PRISMAP collaboration, fuelling global innovation in radiopharmaceuticals.

Software expertise powers up quantum computing The Quantum Software Lab (QSL) at the University of Edinburgh’s School of Informatics, joined forces with the UK’s National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC) when it was launched in April 2023. In just over a year, this partnership has opened doors to cutting-edge hardware platforms – enabling to tackle industry-relevant challenges alongside end-users. With a strong focus on innovation, QSL is committed to demonstrating quantum utility – delivering reliable quantum solutions that truly outperform classical computing. Dr Michael Cuthbert, NQCC Director, shares: “Our partnership is all about driving user adoption. The NQCC can provide a front door to the end-user community and raise awareness of the potential of quantum computing, while our colleagues in Edinburgh bring the academic expertise and rigour to translate the mathematics of quantum theory into use cases and applications that benefit all parts of our society and the economy.” Read more about this exciting collaboration! https://lnkd.in/eXfVXfrx UK Research and Innovation EPSRC STFC Quantum Software Lab The University of Edinburgh School of Informatics, University of Edinburgh Peter Knight Michael Cuthbert Elham Kashefi Chris Heunen #quantumcomputing #quantum #quantumcommunity #quantumcollaboration #quantumtechnologies #innovation #computing #research

To mark 70 years of CERN, the National Physical Laboratory is hosting a day of science lectures celebrating their partnership and the incredible research they conduct together. #CERN70 #UKatCERN

Last year, we had the honour of being invited to join our friends over at CERN to see one of our caesium atomic clocks in action. We installed the clock as part of their ALPHA (Antihydrogen Laser Physics Apparatus) experiment which will ultimately uncover the differences between matter and antimatter. The UK is a key partner in ALPHA and the capability provided by the caesium fountain reinforces the UK’s status as a global leader in the field of low-energy antimatter research. This week, we're delighted to host delegates from CERN and look forward to a day of presentations and exploring collaborations at our site in Teddington. Stay tuned for updates!

How does life survive deep beneath the Earth’s surface? How does an absence of cosmic radiation impact cellular life? What technology should we use to look for life in outer space? 🔬🦠    We’re excited to be hosting #DULIABio24 this week – a series of workshops on #Biology and #BioScience, bringing together scientists from #underground labs around the world. This year, the conference is hosted by STFC and Boulby Underground Laboratory and held in #York 🌍    Underground bioscience is a fascinating field of research – in terms of both currently active studies and future projects and plans. The talks and discussions in the earlier half of this week range from studying how ultra-low radiation environments affect life, to studies of life in low radiation environments, to developing technologies for searching for life beyond Earth – and more...

A new Mars Rover hunting for extra-terrestrial life recently had some crucial parts tested at our Boulby Underground Laboratory 👾 The Rosalind Franklin rover will drill down into Mars' crust hunting for chemical traces of microbial life that may have once lived in the planet's long-gone oceans. It has two cameras: one that will map the terrain to help it identify suitable drilling spots, and another to analyse samples close-up. Boulby's rocky, salty, hostile conditions pose similar challenges to scientific equipment as Mars' surface. Crucially, the salt also contains chemical traces of microbes that lived in an ancient sea millions of years ago. This made it the ideal location to put the cameras to the test. Over the years, Boulby has hosted researchers from NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the European Space Agency - ESA and around the UK to test crucial equipment for experiments on other planets. Professor Charles Cockell, an astrobiologist at The University of Edinburgh and one of the founders of the astrobiology programme at Boulby, says: "The fact this has become an international test site for advanced instrumentation and planetary technologies, and we have NASA teams coming to the UK to use it as an analogue of extra-terrestrial environments, is a really amazing reflection on STFC and Boulby." The Rosalind Franklin rover is planned for launch in 2028 and is part of the ExoMars mission. Read more at the link in the comments 🔽 #ExoMars
