The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) has just released its latest analysis which could transform our understanding about the fate of the Universe. 🌌 Current cosmological models show dark energy as constant, meaning the Universe will expand at an accelerating rate forever. But what if this were not the case? Combining DESI's new data with other cosmic observations has revealed new evidence that suggests dark energy could be withering over time. 🌠 Learn more about what this could mean for the future of the Universe ▶️ https://lnkd.in/ewAKzXEs 📸 Credit: Claire Lamman/DESI collaboration Durham University The University of Edinburgh UCL University of Portsmouth Berkeley Lab Department for Science, Innovation and Technology UK Research and Innovation
About us
The Science and Technology Facilities Council is keeping the UK at the forefront of international science and tackling some of the most significant challenges facing society such as meeting our future energy needs, monitoring and understanding climate change, and global security. The Council has a broad science portfolio and works with the academic and industrial communities to share its expertise in materials science, space and ground-based astronomy technologies, laser science, microelectronics, wafer scale manufacturing, particle and nuclear physics, alternative energy production, radio communications and radar. STFC has 5 main UK sites: Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL), Daresbury Laboratory (DL), UK Astronomy Technology Centre (UKATC), Chilbolton Observatory and Boulby Underground Laboratory. STFC operates or hosts world class experimental facilities including: • In the UK; ISIS Neutron and Muon Source, the Central Laser Facility and RAL Space. STFC is also the majority shareholder in Diamond Light Source Ltd. • Overseas; telescopes on La Palma and Hawaii STFC enables UK researchers to access leading international science facilities by funding membership of international bodies including European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN), the Institut Laue Langevin (ILL), European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) and the European Southern Observatory (ESO). STFC is one of seven publicly-funded research councils and is part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). It is an independent, non-departmental public body of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).

This week is #SevereWeatherAwarenessWeek - let's take a look at how STFC is using satellite technology to monitor and mitigate the environmental effects of wildfires. 🔥 Climate change is making temperatures and rainfall patterns increasingly unpredictable, causing wildfires to be more common than ever before in places like Siberia and Australia. 🌏 Besides the clear and present danger these wildfires cause, they are also responsible for harmful emissions of gases such as carbon monoxide, methane and methanol that pollute the air across the globe. 🛰️ Working closely with partners, RAL Space’s remote sensing group uses data from European and International satellites to improve models for monitoring air quality, climate and severe weather, including wildfires and the pollution impact of heatwaves. Happy #InternationalDayofMathematics! 🧮 #DYK our Computational Maths Group in STFC Scientific Computing has developed a software package that simplifies algorithm selection to save time and energy? With research experiments delivering vast amounts of data, choosing the right algorithm to analyse it can be a long and expensive process, carrying a carbon cost as machines whirr to find a solution. ⚡ SC's new software package 'FitBenchmarking' does the work for them - it can spool through both the data and the algorithms to identify the perfect match, mitigating the need for this long process and replacing it with an efficient, eco-friendly alternative. 🔎 Our team at STFC Scientific Computing has developed an 'Automated Potential Development' (APD) computer workflow that allows scientists to magnify the size of a cell and run simulations on how atoms move. ⚡ This has led to the discovery of a new class of thermoelectrics called 'incipient ionic conductors' that could help reduce climate change by converting heat into electricity, minimising our reliance on fossil fuels and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions.
