Many thanks to Advocate Midlands Circuit Caseworker Charlotte Green for visiting Chambers this morning as part of Pro Bono Week to deliver a session to our barristers, pupils and clerks. The hugely valuable seminar focussed on how pro bono work not only provides a crucial service to those in need but also how it has the potential to enrich practice development through widening barristers' case experience. Thanks also to barrister William Horwood for sharing his first-hand experience of undertaking pro bono work. In addition, it was great to hear more about Advocate's "Bar in the Community" initiative which aims to connect legal professionals with charities in need of support. #ProBonoWeek #WeDoProBono

This week is Pro Bono Week and, as signatories to Advocate's Pro Bono Framework, we are proud to deliver on the goals of our structured pledge to provide pro bono and voluntary support to those who need it most. On Friday, we will welcome Advocate to Chambers to deliver a seminar to our barristers and clerks. Together during the session, we will reinforce the crucial role of pro bono work in bridging the justice gap—ensuring legal support is available for individuals who lack the means to fund it themselves or access legal aid. #ProBonoWeek #WeDoProBono

In an article written by Lillian Garnier, one of our family pupils, the unusual circumstances in which a local authority may remove a child who is placed with their prospective adopters - with a view to them being adopted - is discussed, and the legal framework underpinning this, explored. In addition, the familiar routes to challenge placement and adoption orders are re-visited, including some practical considerations to bear in mind when faced with these particular applications.  Please view full article here: https://lnkd.in/emNxKpW7

Sophie Laurence was led by Mr Nuvoloni KC of No5 Barristers' Chambers at the Court of Appeal in the landmark case of R and C (Adoption or Fostering (Re [2024] EWCA Civ 1302. The Court of Appeal has provided guidance on the approach of the Family Court to post-adoption contact. Lord Justice Baker has ruled that at the stage of making a s.21 Adoption and Children Act 2002 Order, it is the Court who has the responsibility for determining whether there should be ongoing contact between the child and the birth family. We are currently accepting mini-pupillage applications for placements throughout 2025. We are particularly keen to see applications from candidates who have an established link to the Midlands, which includes studying in the region full-time. We will give priority to those who do not already have mini-pupillage experience, and we do not judge applications based on the reputation of the university you study at. There are now just a little over two weeks to go until we close the process for another year. You can find out more about what to expect from undertaking a mini-pupillage with us and how to apply here: https://lnkd.in/eUGsky5y Applications close on 15th November.

Darron Whitehead, led by David Mason KC of No5 Barristers Chambers, prosecuted a Coventry University student accused of killing her newborn baby. The student, who had kept the pregnancy hidden, gave birth to the child in her student accommodation before placing the baby into a cereal box, then inside a sealed bag and then into her suitcase. The jury rejected infanticide and convicted the student of murder. A life sentence, with a minimum prison term of 17 years, was handed down at Warwick Crown Court on Friday. #barristers #criminallaw
