Highlight of the week That’s easy. The King's Fund annual conference. There is a way out for the NHS. Things #healthcare never mattered more and the programme was brilliantly set out to push through to the future and the positive. Some might say the highlight was the Prime Minster and entourage slipping into the agenda with the Darzi report. The NHS is critically ill. We knew that. Let’s wait for the policy and actions… or can we influence government thinking? My people highlight was Chris van Tulleken - he is going to quote me on some real world data. He will change the world by building a movement and being brilliantly strategic with the change needed that explains why I am fat… My professional highlight was being on the panel thanks to Rukshana Kapasi and Barnardo's, discussing the needs and future for children and young people, describing the work we at STRASYS achieved with Alder Hey Children's Hospital Nationally, there is one policy worth implementing to the full which is thoroughly evidence based - Sure Start. The work of Tessa Jowel and Gordon Brown. The interventions and support for 0-5 year olds all those years ago are reaping benefits in health and education outcomes today. Jess Jowel is now working to bring energy back to her mother’s legacy that has left a positive impact on the lives of so many children and families. Dear The Labour Party government - just do it. The final plenary was arguably the most stark where the OBR data brought to sharp focus the risk to the nation if we don’t address the supply side (productivity) and demand side (health of the nation). We will, if we carry on as we are now, be spending unimaginable amounts of money on the NHS. My neighbouring delegate turned to me and said - “I am leaving the country after hearing that”. A young GP. We have the worst cardiac, stroke, and cancer outcomes - at the wrong end of the OECD league tables - despite spending more and more, employing more and more. Deploying more and more innovative ideas. Surely the answer lies in how we deploy and use our resources. We have to challenge the current #businessmodels of the DGH and - don’t beat me up - even general practice. Right now we are not meeting #patient and #population needs. We are failing the tax payer. We are then failing everyone. It is #reform. Reform of the business models that then reallocate and make better use of resources to meet needs. I am staying. We at STRASYS have work to do with #NHS leaders. Sarah Woolnough Rebecca Gorringe

The #NHS is critically sick Lord Darzi has set out his diagnosis of what ails the NHS. Those working in it, for it, and rely on it, can see feel and hear all that the report has set out. Warts and all with refreshingly honest language. The challenge is the treatment plan. The government has two levers. Policy and money. The three key areas that have quickly become the political rhetoric out of the report are a mix of hope, need and reform. 1. Analogue to #digital (hope) That will excite all those with futurist in their bios. Especially the Ai bits. No one will argue the need to modernise the infrastructure to enable digital things to happen. Meanwhile I get a text for my appointment that suits the hospital, but also after the date has passed by. Meanwhile South Korea and Taiwan move to 6G. 2. #Prevention (need) If it’s primary prevention and about #inequalities then social policies that are as transformative as Atlee will be needed. The NHS will play at the margins based on its current business model. 3. #Community not acute sector (reform) Follow the money. CEOs leading the acute sector know how much waste and trapped value is bounded in their buildings. We can show them evidence based business model shifts that shifts work to meet evidenced needs out of their buildings. The decision is theirs. But. They need the ‘accountability industry’ at the centre to not come in the way. As stated in the report. Also - stop appointing more and more ologists because an ologist says so. That should be a system population needs based investment. At STRASYS we are expert on the reform and evidence based allocation of resources to meet evidenced patient and population needs. I would of course say that. But I have lived and analysed way too many NHS provider strategies to know why we are stuck and understand what it means to think and act differently. It takes leadership, courage and decision making.

Can the NHS address health inequalities? The belief that the NHS, as the primary institution addressing ill health, is also the right body to tackle health inequalities is widespread.   This assumption has led to significant investments and countless initiatives across hospitals, community trusts, and general practices, all aimed at addressing inequalities through data collection and policy implementation.   However, this essay argues that the NHS, focused primarily on treating disease, is not equipped to address the root causes of health inequalities, which lie in the broader social determinants such as education, economics, and community.   STRASYS's Dr Nadeem Moghal argues to truly make a difference, we must look beyond the NHS and consider a more holistic approach that addresses these underlying social factors. A typical hospital in England has staff representing over 100 nationalities, many cultures and backgrounds. They also represent their local communities. In a people-to-people service organisation, the decisions and choices they make determine the quality of care and outcomes for patients. How do cognitive biases and groupthink play into health inequalities? We are delighted to have Maggie Oldham, CEO, Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, join us at the next STRASYS Thinking Differently webinar series on addressing health inequalities.    With decades of experience in challenged Trusts and health systems, Maggie is passionate about improving services for local communities and emphasises the importance of supporting colleagues in delivering better care.   We will hear about how Maggie is approaching some unique challenges, in a community where some areas have the highest levels of deprivation and the second most difficult region in the country for women to advance in the workplace.   Register your place for free here: https://lnkd.in/ekQNtNi9 #deprivation #StrasysThinkingDifferently #NHSEngland

Children from the most deprived areas are more than twice as likely to be obese compared to those from the least deprived areas, according to NHS England. The role of systems is critical in narrowing these inequalities. We are delighted to have Arif Rajpura, Director of Public Health, Blackpool Council, join our esteemed panel on our next STRASYS Thinking Differently webinar series.    Arif’s current priorities include working on ‘whole systems’ integration, working with partners from public, private and voluntary sector organisations to improve population health.   We’ll learn about the necessity for a paradigm shift in our thinking and approach to connecting with communities. It can't just be a plan; it needs to start with the system.   Register your place for free here: https://lnkd.in/ekQNtNi9 #communities #wholesystemthinking #StrasysThinkingDifferently

The conversation around diversity and inclusion, especially within the NHS, is gaining momentum. However, some BAME-focused initiatives, while well-intentioned, risk reinforcing a sense of “otherness” rather than fostering true inclusivity.   Existing initiatives often miss addressing the deeper, structural inequalities faced by minority groups. This essay explores the need for organisations to move beyond fulfilling regulatory requirements or organisational optics and create learning environments that genuinely cater to the diverse needs of all employees, fostering a culture of true inclusivity.   Get involved in the discussion https://lnkd.in/ekgQ4Dfj #inequalities #BAME #Inclusivity Dr Nadeem Moghal

Mortality rates from COPD and lung cancer are significantly higher in the most deprived areas of England, according to the Office of National Statistics. Join us for an expert panel discussion and debate on solutions to address these inequalities. We will explore the importance of community and broadening the conversation to outside the hospitals and buildings. We’re excited to be joined by Samira Ben Omar. She advises national, regional and local organisations on leadership approaches to improve equality, diversity and inclusion.     Her impressive work in community engagement and activation is sure to captivate. When asked, "What is community?" she responds, "It depends on who is asking the question."    She will reframe the challenge by asking, "How do we start thinking about a whole health community instead of just a hospital building or structure?"   Register your place for free here: https://lnkd.in/ekQNtNi9 #community #StrasysThinkingDifferently STRASYS
