Throwback to an unforgettable two weeks in Romania! I’m the one rocking the tanned face and the classic white legs—proof of those long days working outdoors… Back in my second year of college, my team and I won the Scottish Inter College Competition—Glasgow vs. Edinburgh vs. Stirling. It was one of those surreal days, cutting stone with snow crashing down around us, good old Scottish weather eh? When the judges announced us as the winners, we were given an amazing opportunity: a chance to fly to Romania and take part in a conservation masterclass. That trip wasn’t just about mastering my craft—it became a turning point for me. It got me thinking about what the future could hold if I put in the hard work and stayed passionate about stonemasonry. Looking back at this photo brings back so many memories of where it all began, and I’m proud of how far Stratum has come since then… But the exciting part? Our Latest Project in Helensburgh We're excited to share a glimpse of a special ongoing project! Our team has been hard at work over the past few weeks, carrying out essential stone replacement on the bay windows of this beautiful home The stone you see in these photos plays a critical role, both structurally and aesthetically. From the moment it’s delivered to the site, it takes a high level of skill and precision to ensure every piece is shaped and installed perfectly. Our talented stonemasons have carefully marked and dressed each stone to match the historic details of the home, and now they’re ready to be fitted in place. Once the stonework is complete, the refurbished stained glass will be installed, restoring this home’s unique character. Even I didn’t realise it was this bad… I’ve always been aware of the poor condition of many historic buildings across the country, but seeing the full extent all in one place was a real eye-opener. There are thousands of buildings at high risk, and many of them are still in use today. It’s a harsh reminder of the fragility of our built heritage and how urgently action is needed. A grand entrance! What a beautiful sight to look at when entering your home. We’ve carried out some much needed tlc to our client's home. Firstly, we gave the property a gentle clean using our superheated system. We then repointed specific areas with a white lime mortar where there was open beds and joints. This ensures our clients home is protected from any water ingress or inclement weather as we approach the winter season. When all works were complete and scaffolding was dismantled, the final thing to do was to walk round the job with our client. We’ve been to many places on our travels.... Some environments are easier to work in than others. This is an example of a project were carried out in Edinburgh. This is a difficult area to work in due to the gradient of the ground and the surroundings. With careful planning and communication our team got the job completed for our client with great results. Meet a younger version of Scott… I have fond memories as a young child being gifted my first toolbox, helping my papa and dad out from a young age I always loved hard work I first started working on building sites from the age of 14 and soon realised I enjoyed hard work and working with my hands With the values and morals passed down from my family, I took the decision to start up my own Stonemasonry business, Stratum Masonry. This venture started out in the spare room of my house in 2019 during lockdown. Admittedly, the first twelve months were challenging but I'm in a fortunate position now with an incredible team that specialise in the built environment sector.
