Equine Assisted Therapy in London. We offer life changing mental health & education services for young people aged 4-25.

About us

A life-changing mental health & education provision in North London. We work with vulnerable young people age 5 - 25 from across London and the Home Counties, many of whom struggle to engage in traditional therapy and classroom settings but thrive in the inclusive outdoor setting of our stables. We are a charity partnership run by senior Clinical Psychologists and Nationally Respected Horse Trainers. We work with London’s most vulnerable young people who are excluded from education or at risk of exclusion. Typical young people we work have multiple mental health diagnoses and have experienced childhood abuse and / or neglect. Many have a learning difficulty diagnosis and over 30% have been diagnosed with autism. The young people we work with have lost all trust in humans and are typically living very isolated lives. Our horses break down the barriers that young people put up because they react honestly to the emotions and behaviours that young people show. As prey animals 99% of a horse’s communications is via body language. This means they pick up on human emotions and mirror them in their own behaviour. A horse will run away from an angry young person, ignore an unsure young person, relax around a calm young person etc. Through working with these natural reactions the young people learn to identify and manage their emotions in order to build relationships with our horses. As young people learn to trust the horses they begin to rebuild trust in humans, starting with our staff and extending to the other education and mental health support professionals in other support organisations. This newfound trust along with the confidence and interpersonal skills developed with us enables young people to turn their lives around and re engage with education and society more generally.

We're on our way! Thanks to the generous donations to our summer fundraising campaign, and with the help from our hard-working volunteers, we've started preparing the yard for the winter season. This Friday, October 18th, we are going to lay some more mud mats before the weather turns wet and cold and we would love to bring some more volunteers on board to get the job done. If you can spare a few hours, please email clare@strengthandlearningthroughhorses.org or sign up via Neighbourly (link in the comments)

  • "Thomas has taught me that you should always try new things, even if you're scared of them. We relate a lot because he can be quite anxious sometimes, and he can be scared of different things. But he always gives things a go, so everyone else should give things a go too. Thomas inspires me because he is so kind and gentle to everyone, and he's just amazing, really." (Jesse, SLTH client). Earlier this year, we shared that our longest-serving equine staff member, Thomas, was nominated for the BBC Make A Difference award (animal category). The award ceremony took place this week at the iconic BBC Radio Theatre, and we were delighted to accept the invitation and celebrate all the nominees. It was a very special afternoon, and even though Thomas didn't win, he is a winner in our eyes. In his career spanning over 10 years, Thomas helped over 5000 young people overcome their challenges, all the while taking care of his herd and bringing joy to everyone who meets him.

  • 🌟 Open Day 2024 🌟 We couldn't have asked for a better day to welcome our community to our stables! With perfect weather and a steady stream of visitors from the moment the gates opened, it was a day to remember. Thanks to everyone who came to support us, especially to Barner Mayor Councillor Tony Vourou for opening the event. #equinetherapystables #equinetherapycentre #openday #communityday

August marks the start of our campaign to Get Winter Ready, and we are looking to our supporters for help getting our stables ready for the months ahead. The last few weeks have been sunny and dry in our stables, but the winter 2023 memories of knee-deep mud in our fields keep our team focused on getting the place ready before the rain comes. Our goal is to raise £3500 to secure our site so that we can provide our young people with the mental health support they urgently need. How you can help: ✅ Donate - every pound brings us closer to our goal. ✅ Share - spread the word by sharing our campaign with your network. ✅ Engage - follow us to keep up to date with our campaign. Visit our website to read what happened last year and what we're planning to get ahead this winter https://shorturl.at/j2TjZ Big thanks to all our supporters and partners for helping us with our mission to make equine therapy accessible to everyone who needs it.

  • Team building events. With a difference. 'This was my first time I ever touched a horse. I am not really good around animals due to childhood phobia. But 'Unicorn' was lovely. When I requested her 'come girl, let's go' she looked up and took a step. That moment I was so emotional. Not crying but just emotional.' Moments like these make our team-building events even more special. Horses have an incredible ability to mirror human emotions, making them brilliant (and perfectly non-judgemental) partners for developing communication, trust, and collaboration within teams. Thank you to the brand team from the National Lottery Community Fund for the beautiful feedback, and being such good sports :)

  • Equine therapy horses, like our horse Thomas, make a tangible difference in the lives of our young people and their families. In an interview with BBC London, Jesse's mom shares the positive changes she has observed in her daughter after working with Thomas. We are thrilled to announce that our longest-serving equine staff member, Thomas, has been nominated for the BBC Make a Difference Award 2024!

  • ✅ Increased emotional regulation. ✅ Improved ability to process trauma. ✅ Reduced anxiety. These are just some of the changes young people reported after completing one of our programmes. In 2022/23 we helped over 360 young people, delivering more than 600 sessions. With sufficient funding, we can help many more. Raising funds is a ongoing challenge for a small charity like ours, and today we are excited to announce that we have received substantial funding from The National Lottery Community Fund for the next five years. Thanks to their generous support, we will be able to reach more young people, provide access to green spaces for our local community, challenge stereotypes and remove barriers to equestrianism for everyone. Thank you The National Lottery Community Fund and National Lottery players! #nationallotterycommunityfund #nationallottery #charityfunding #northlondoncharity #equinetherapycharity #equinetherapy
