With a lot of content to digest from yesterday’s budget, we've collated some thoughts from key financial commentators on the impact of the measures announced by the Chancellor. The Financial Times’ Editorial Board have penned a piece in which they opine that having inherited a deeply troubled economy, the budget was “dramatic in scale”, with it being “a turning point for Britain, towards a significantly stronger role for the state in its economic model.” The article goes on to conclude by saying that the chancellor has “opened the door to higher investment, which if sustained, could be game-changing for Britain's growth trajectory” but that it is now essential that new funds are channelled efficiently to productivity-enhancing projects. https://lnkd.in/eAaQAgd2 Elsewhere, Claer Barrett writes that although the Chancellor may have promised to put pounds in the pockets of working people at her maiden Budget, higher payroll taxes for employers could cost some people their jobs. Barrett goes on to say that despite the increase not being applied directly to the pay packets of working people, they will certainly feel its financial impact and that it the success of the policy depends on whether employers respond by cutting jobs. https://lnkd.in/e9utvYYc Following on from this, The Telegraph includes comments from corporate bosses that the increase in employer national insurance contributions may see hiring freezes and pay cuts. According to Tom Clougherty, the executive director of the Institute of Economic Affairs, it would be a “fantasy” to claim that the increase on employers would not affect working people. https://lnkd.in/envwN8Gu According to The Guardian the International Monetary Fund has welcomed the measures announced by Reeves, saying her £40bn of tax rises would boost growth “sustainably”. In what was a rare intervention, the IMF backed the Chancellor’s increase in investment and extra spending to ease the financial pressure on public services and boost growth. The IMF said that the new budget rules showed that the government was committed to bringing down the UK’s debts over the longer term and that it approved of the measures announced. https://lnkd.in/eEtPXYiJ If you are struggling to get your head around the announcements will affect you, The Guardian has produced a calculator so you can work out if you'll be better or worse off https://lnkd.in/ehbvEk8B And for all the budding Chancellors amongst us, the Financial Times has created a game to see if you could balance the books! https://lnkd.in/edkaM9me

I'm walking 26 miles on September 14th to raise money for Macmillan cancer support. Macmillan nurses provided end of life care to my Mum and we would not have coped without them. Any donations gratefully received. Macmillan Cancer Support #mightyhike #justgiving #cancer
