The highlight of this week so far has been an enjoyable couple of days in Birmingham with the SuperTech WM team, taking part in two of their events as part of Birmingham Tech Week. This included an informative roundtable hosted by the Innovate Finance policy team at KPMG’s offices, which focused on the government’s first 100 days in office. Adam Jackson and Christopher Foo. The overall sentiment was positive about the progress so far, and it was very helpful to have everything summarised in a short presentation. The Q&A that followed highlighted the need for coordinated action, and to drive more action in areas like financial inclusion. It was also clear that the predicted changes in capital gains tax and employer national insurance are individually or jointly painful for FinTech businesses, as they are for businesses more widely. The evening was spent at the SuperTech annual ProfTech dinner, where around 70 people from the region’s FinTech, LegalTech and PropTech sectors gathered for a thoroughly enjoyable evening including keynotes from Hilary Smyth-Allen and Graeme Chaplin, the regional Agent for the Bank of England. A great opportunity to catch up with people including Nicola Anderson, Chris Lawes, Karen Elliott, David Stewart, Kifayat Khan, PhD, Stephen Hunt FCA, James Edwards, Chris Higham, Giles Horwitch-Smith, Stuart Green, Gillian Painter, Jof Walters, Kikun Alo, Alexeis Garcia Perez. It was especially good to see Tony Randle in person for the first time since before Covid, and to compare notes on the rate and nature of adoption of AI and other technologies in the legal sector.... an interesting topic of conversation! There was also time to drop into the Whitecap Consulting offices at Alpha Works for a couple of hours on Wednesday after meetings, which included catching up with Jof Walters and Hilary Smyth-Allen on various regional developments. #birminghamtechweek Dolly Chakraborty Pia van Antwerpen Jo Griffin

As my last turn in Birmingham Tech Week 2024, I thoroughly enjoyed the panel event with Aston University for their soft launch of the Enterprise Centre for Generative AI focused on #fintech today. As the only non-techie on the stage, I thought I'd have little to say alongside my fellow panellists from the titans of Goldman Sachs IBM and Capgemini and Barclays...but then when have I ever had nothing to say?! Thought provoking and inspirational in equal measure; I can't wait to see where Aston take this new initiative. Thanks for the invite Alexeis Garcia Perez and Yiannis Maos MBE
