Having well-trained people will not always prevent incidents and accidents from happening, but if yachts don't have captains and crew with strong professional capabilities, such events are much more likely to happen. Just as importantly, should a serious event occur, which sometimes happens due to circumstances that could not be avoided, then having highly capable crew onboard can make the difference between life and death. An observation I am keen to share is that well-trained means being fully worked up and able to perform in the most challenging circumstances, even those that are unexpected. Having attended a mandatory course some time ago will not 'cut it' and will quickly be found to be inadequate. Importantly, well-trained captains and crew also require a high level of 'Human Capability' (Interpersonal Skills, Leadership & Management, and Teamwork), as these attributes are critical to preventing accidents and having the ability to deal positively with dynamic situations as they evolve. Finally, a lesson I have personal experience of is that when a catastrophe happens at sea, you may find you there is no external help in range to render assistance. The situation is then clear, the team onboard either deals with it effectively, or you sink (literally!). #superyacht #yachting #megayacht #yachtcrew #yachtlife #chiefofficer  #sailing #maritime #seafarers  #shipmanagement #vessels #superyachts #captain #shipsandshipping #maritimesafety #Captains #ocean #shipsandshipping BZ Maritime Leadership Tracey Santrian Superyacht Training Group

This past month has been incredibly challenging for the yacht industry, with far too many casualties that, in my view, could have been prevented. I'm writing this with a deep sense of urgency and passion. For the past five years, I've often been told I'm "too tough on the industry." I've heard countless times, "Other inspectors have allowed this and that." It's never easy to board a vessel with a crew that collectively has over a century of experience and then have to write up a deficiency. I understand the weight of those words—some may face job consequences, and others might take offense, especially when they’ve dedicated their lives to this work. I understand the pride and passion you have for your ship, which is why it can be hard to accept criticism. But please know this: I care deeply. When I step on board, I bring a fresh set of eyes to spot what might have been missed in the rush or stress of the moment. It may seem like a small thing, but as we all know, it's often the small things that escalate into big issues later. My goal isn’t to nitpick—it's to protect the crew, passengers, vessel, and environment from harm. Every time I signed off on a vessel, I'm making a commitment that it’s safe to sail. I take that responsibility with the utmost seriousness, knowing that lives depend on our decisions. This is why I'm firm in my inspections. Just as you are passionate about your ship, I'm equally passionate about your safety. Let’s work together to ensure everyone is safe. I'm here to help—if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out. And if I don't have the answer, I promise I'll find it for you. #Safety #Yachts

I am very much looking forward to this next Superyacht LEADER Network webinar; a very topical subject that transcends beyond yachting. For most, being in a command position is something they strive for and is seen as a privilege. Command however also brings many responsibilities and demands, not least the challenge of inspiring crew to be the best they can be, both personally and professionally, whatever their generation! #superyachts #maritime #yachting #yachtcaptain #ocean

LEADING THE NEW GENERATION OF YACHTIE The next Superyacht LEADER Network (SLN) Continuous Professional Development Webinar will be held this Thursday (4 July 2024) from 1700-1900 UTC +1 (UK time). Why are many in command saying they are finding the new generation of yacht crew difficult to lead? In this webinar, we will explore the various challenges that captains are flagging, and importantly identify the opportunities that the deployment of astute leadership strategies can realise. The webinar will offer a fresh perspective and tips on how to connect with, engage, motivate, and align your leadership approach to get the best from this ‘new generation.’ After all, these crew members will be, and in some cases, already are, HODs, with some ultimately becoming captains themselves. If you are an operational captain, or an experienced officer at a senior level on a larger yacht, and want to undertake regular Continuous Professional Network with your peers, then join the Superyacht LEADER Network. There is no fee to join the network or to attend the webinars. Just e-mail Tracey Santrian at tracey@bzmaritimeleadership.com with your details including evidence of your professional status. Lead Medical Consultant - Maritime at Red Square Medical

Oh no! Alan has been at it again. This time he has collapsed on the Heli deck but where in the world is he and what help is available? As crew on a Superyacht you have to be prepared for anything with the guests that come onboard. They don't need a seafarers medical meaning they could have multiple medical conditions all of which could be affected by seasickness, alcohol, a change in routine, the heat..... It's important to have a plan for every possible outcome and drill it to find the weaknesses before refining and drilling again. Alan is currently in a cargo hold on an Easy Jet flight back to the UK to put another crew through their paces in a couple of weeks.

Maritime Human Capability Specialist. Commissioned Officer - Royal Naval Reserve

For the past 35 years, I have proudly identified as a member of the British Military - specifically the Royal Navy. With 30 years full-time Service followed by 5 years as a Reservist, I've enjoyed being part of a larger network where you are never alone, as individuals have a similar ethos and values. My military career has seen my identity evolve from teenager, wife, mum, leader, Social Worker and Commissioned Officer ("ma'am"). So now it's time for one more change. Not being able to identify as 'currently Serving' will take a little getting used to but I've had a great first day identifying as a Veteran!

🌊🚢 Reflecting on Our Submersible Rescue Training 🚢🌊 Last year, we conducted a comprehensive submersible rescue training exercise in the Pacific Ocean using a survey class ROV for an ongoing submersible project in the region. This training was performed aboard a unique super yacht for one of our clients. Our team showcased advanced rescue techniques and operational excellence while emphasizing the training of the yacht's crew to assist with operations and highlighting the critical importance of seamless communication for real-time scenarios. This method of rescue and recovery of the sub to the surface using an ROV serves as a last resort solution in case all built-in rescue solutions of the submersible fail. At Sub-Merge, we are committed to safety and maintaining the highest levels of operational excellence. Through fostering strong teamwork and communication, we enhance safety protocols and response times during actual missions. Interested in having us conduct this vital ROV rescue training for your team? Reach out to us to learn more about enhancing your underwater safety protocols. 📞📧 #SubMerge #ROV #SubmersibleRescue

Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development (CIPD) research has found that work now occupies a less central place in people's lives with an increasing proportion of employees feeling that a job is ‘just a way of earning money’. This transactional view of work could be a concern for organisations, as most have traditionally relied on employees' loyalty and discretionary effort' as an unwritten contract of work. Of more concern however is for the maritime and superyacht industries, as this transactional view of employment does not fit with life at sea. Could this transactional attitude towards work therefore be a growing factor in why it is proving difficult to attract and retain high-calibre officers and crew? This 'transaction approach' to employment is emerging from wider societal factors and influences, and so the maritime and superyacht industries do not have the means to counter it directly. Therefore, a convincing case needs to be made to encourage people that a career at sea is worthwhile and valued. Whilst this is easier said than done, one thing is for certain, it will require some innovative and transformational LEADERSHIP! BZ Maritime Leadership are the industry experts in the professional development of captains, HODs, crew, and shoreside staff. D-Day at sea: Operation Neptune On 6 June 1944, two naval task forces landed over 132,000 ground troops on the beaches of Normandy as part of Operation Neptune, the seaborne invasion of northern France which made D-Day possible. Operation Neptune was the naval component of Operation Overlord: the codename for the Allied invasion of northwest Europe to liberate Europe from Nazi occupation. Nearly 7,000 vessels took part in the landings on the five Normandy beaches. Given our nautical heritage, the team BZ Maritime Leadership wishes to highlight the tremendous skill, determination, and courage of seafarers who made the operation a success. Many suffered horrific injuries or were killed, and some carried, often hidden, mental scars for the rest of their lives. It may be 80 years ago, but the sacrifice and achievement, of both military and civilian seafarers, on that day should never be underestimated or forgotten. Horror at 37,000ft: inside the Singapore flight hit by fatal turbulence. A tragic and unexpected incident and my thoughts are with the dead man’s family and friends. Having read the article, my concern is to whether superyacht crews generally have the human capabilities (interpersonal, leadership, management, and teamwork) to successfully overcome a similar freak event, particularly if they are far out to sea or in a remote location? Having been onboard a ship that had a catastrophic and fatal major accident, I know from experience what is required to survive as there may not be the emergency services at hand. At that point you quickly realise that it’s down to your crew mates and you to save the day! #seafarers #maritime #superyacht #superyachts #yachtcrew  #yachtcaptain #captain #maritimeindustry #shipmanagement  #shipping #leadershipdevelopment  #yacht #yachting #yachtlife #megayacht #Captains  #superyachtindustry #boat #superyachts #yachtcharter #sailing #yachtworld #boating #boats #motoryacht #yachtlifestyle #megayachts #yachtcrew  #yachtie #superyachtlife #ocean #luxuryyachts #yachtinglife #superyachtleadernetwork #maritimesafety #maritimetraining https://lnkd.in/eZrNwx9C
