Tomorrow our National Helpline appears on episode 1 of BBC Documentary: Darren McGarvey: The State We’re In. With a focus on Justice, Darren looks at our volunteers’ work to support people who must face civil and family courts without the help of lawyers. Darren hears directly from one of our clients who faced two sudden bereavements, followed by finding herself in a legal process. “How on earth are you supposed to take on litigation, if you can’t afford it. The whole jargon of court papers, court documents, I struggled to understand what they were, and that’s very distressing, and very very frightening, if you’re now in this process, a legal process, and you don’t have a clue what these things mean but it’s tying you into something that has consequences.” Watch on BBC 2, 9pm. See us 29 minutes in. If you can’t wait until then, watch on BBC iPlayer, here: https://bbc.in/42XhNNe #Justice #SupportThroughCourt #AccessToJustice #BBC Birmingham City University Birmingham City School of Law

No one should face court alone www.supportthroughcourt.org
About us
It is hard to imagine facing court on your own. Yet this is the reality for many people facing life-changing situations: bankruptcy, eviction, deportation, or loss of contact with children. Many thousands of people who cannot afford a lawyer must represent themselves through some of the most stressful situations any of us may have to face. Support Through Court volunteers offer practical and emotional support to people who are representing themselves in civil and family court proceedings. We have over 700 trained and experienced volunteers who give free, independent assistance 5,000 times a month across 23 court centres across England and Wales. Our aim is to provide free support to anyone who comes to us. We provide reassurance and practical help; we talk our clients through the legal processes and we help them understand what will happen in the court room. In short, we aim to help our clients engage with the justice system and, regardless of the outcome of their cases, know that they represented themselves to the best if their abilities.

We were thrilled to be selected as the official charity partner of this year's MALA - Midlands Asian Lawyers Association Annual Ball. This brilliant network is dedicated to promoting equality & diversity in the legal profession and we were extremely grateful to be a part of their annual ball. Thanks to their generosity and the spectacular energy in the room, we raised £6,624 for Support Through Court, funding 207 sessions of support for people facing the civil and family courts without a lawyer.
