To restore our climate, we’re going to need a complementary suite of solutions. At the Sustainable Aviation Futures conference, Michael Avery emphasized, "We’re not in competition with SAF (sustainable aviation fuel)," highlighting how carbon removal technologies, like Direct Air Capture, can work together with SAF.

October is always a busy season, and this year was no exception, with a series of enriching and thought-provoking events. It’s a time where balancing work and life becomes a challenge, but the opportunities to learn and engage with brilliant minds make it worthwhile. The Sustainable Aviation Futures NA conference was a standout, offering deep dives into SAF, particularly in areas of production and regulation—my personal favourite. It was a privilege to join a panel moderated by Tom Light, sharing the stage with Erin Cooke and Josh Schulnick. Later, I had the pleasure of leading a panel discussion on building the workforce for SAF, an interdisciplinary conversation with incredible insights from Nancy Newman, Aaron Robinson, Patrice Wint, and Graham Provost. The depth of preparation and the richness of the discussions made it truly memorable. And of course, it is always a pleasure to attend sessions by Shashank Nigam as they are not only content-focused but also truly interactive. Just days later, I had the priviledge to participate in the International Civil Aviation Organization LTAG Stocktaking event, as part of the key panel that explored the progress made toward ambitious industry and state goals. While the path ahead remains challenging, ICAO's role in facilitating the transition is crucial. Thank you to Jane Hupe for leading the discussion, to Julie Kitcher, Isabel Galiana and Juliet Agyapomaa Okae for the honest and constructive insights. And this series was concluded with the World Aviation Festival, where I had the honour of moderating a SkyTeam RISE panel dedicated to breaking gender barriers in aviation. The energy in the hall was incredible, and even though we ran out of headphones, the conversation resonated deeply. I’m grateful to Charlotte Lollar, Helen Demosthenous, Janneke van der Graaff - Kukler, and Maryam Telmesani for their invaluable contributions to this important discussion. And a big shout out to Yuliia Gelion for making the panel possible. It’s been a whirlwind, but every discussion was a reminder of how essential these dialogues are to driving change in the industry.

After a busy couple of weeks, I’ve finally had a chance to summarize my top 3 takeaways from the recent Sustainable Aviation Futures conference in Houston. “Collaboration” was the most uttered word – Everyone was talking about how the aviation sector and the many adjacent actors, and some unusual suspects all need to work together to bring Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to scale. I couldn’t agree more. There was a recurring question of whether we are on track to meet the US SAF Grand Challenge milestone of 3 billion gallons of domestic SAF production by 2030. I would say the sentiment is somewhere between guarded optimism and tempered pessimism—in other words, opinion seems to be clustering in the middle. There was consensus that progress at any scale is the key. We all are driving in the same direction, it’s just a matter of speed. I’ll be very interested to see how the sentiment measures at Sustainable Aviation Futures 2025… US vs. European policy differences came up in multiple conversations and contexts. The US primarily uses incentives to advance SAF, and Europe primarily uses mandates. The resulting market dynamics influence all parts of the value chain, from feedstock supply, to production, to distribution. We have yet to see what will come from these complex dynamics, but it may be unexpected. For instance, to quote a few round numbers I heard bounced around, if fossil jet fuel is $2 to $3/gallon, and you can sell SAF for, say, $5/gallon, it’s currently a tough sell in the US. But, to comply with stacked mandates a European airline may pay $23/gallon (!) for SAF, so where do you think US domestic SAF is going to go? Even with the cost and carbon intensity of shipping SAF overseas, it was discussed as a potential scenario given market imbalance due to such divergent policy approaches. Other tidbits: Demand signals – I heard this a lot; these are all the things' investors are looking for to signal that investing in SAF production is a decent long-term bet. That is everything from long-term corporate offtake agreements to more durable and lasting policy incentives. We need more and stronger signals, across the value chain. Book and Claim – There was a lot of discussion and just basic education around book and claim. This uneven familiarity might be another symptom of European policy, where mandates may be to have actual SAF in your fuel tank instead of just ensuring “your” SAF is flown somewhere in the world so you (and only you) can claim the scope 3 credit.

Last week, Keith Sawyer, Avfuel's manager of alternative fuels, joined industry experts at the Sustainable Aviation Futures North America Congress to discuss the critical role business, regional and general aviation airports play in advancing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). On the panel, Keith unpacked key challenges to accessing SAF, such as incentives for aviation to decarbonize at scale, and how small and medium-sized airports can meet their sustainability goals. Thank you, Sustainable Aviation Futures for hosting such a great event! #SAF #Sustainability #Avfuel

It was an honor to discuss the #infrastructure requirements of #decarbonization and #SAF at Sustainable Aviation Futures last week in Houston. We discussed regulations, safety requirements, physical infrastructure builds, testing / certification and stakeholder needs throughout the international value chain. To decarbonize as well as to enable growth, we will need new infrastructure investment (including #PermittingReform), adherence to quality / safety standards and new ways of thinking in an energy industry that is decarbonizing *and* decentralizing. Thank you to my panel’s industry experts for sharing their insights into the physical handling, testing and certification of SAF: Dr. Brian Marquardt, Business Leader, MarqMetrix All-In-One Process Raman Analyzer, Thermo Fisher Scientific Hamza Mazloum 馬翰思 SAF Procurement Manager, Cathay Pacific Dr. Henrik von Storch, Director Global Sustainable Aviation Fuels, DHL Express Dr. Shen WANG, Senior Partner / Founder, Green Development Institute / SAFPAC Inc Dan Frank, Vice President, Argus Consulting Special thanks to Ros Johnston and the entire Sustainable Aviation Futures team for organizing an outstanding conference attending leaders across the #AviationDecarbonization and #CleanEnergy ecosystem.
