Did you read your local #WalkingCyclingIndex report and wonder what the UK-wide data was? Look no further - we have now published our report that aggregates data from across the UK. 💡 Sustrans’ Walking and Cycling Index, the largest independent survey of active travel in the UK, has revealed that a majority (56%) of people want to shift investment in road building schemes to funding options for walking, wheeling, cycling and public transport. 🚶♀️ 👨🦽 🚲 The report also shows greater public demand for active travel over driving, with 50% wanting to walk more and 43% wanting to cycle more. A third of people want to make greater use of public transport. #Sustrans #ActiveTravel #SustainableTransport #Cycling #Walking Read all about it here 👇 https://lnkd.in/ebN_u23T

75 years young, Satwant Singh is a grandfather who discovered the joys of cycling later in life. He is now also inspiring people from all backgrounds to give cycling a go – and is building a community in the process. With friends, Satwant set up Bolton Road Community Cycling Club to provide a space for people to come together and cycle. The local Gurdwara (Sikh temple) offered a secure place for the group to park second-hand cycles for the rides and Satwant also carries out bike maintenance checks and repairs at the site so they’re safe to ride. Satwant is a local legend to many in Bradford, where he is regularly spotted leading groups of cyclists along the National Cycle Network next to the canal, on the Spen Valley Greenway (Route 66), or helping others to fix and maintain their cycles. Our video explores Satwant’s journey and the community he has built, emphasising how cycling can break down barriers and promote social connections. He sees the National Cycle Network as a key tool in encouraging more people to come together. “I really hope more people will start looking at it and enjoying it, because it’s a magic thing,” says Satwant. #Sustrans #ActiveTravel #SustainableTransport #Cycling #Walking #LittleRedSign #NationalCycleNetwork #PathsForEveryone

Yesterday, Sustrans CEO Xavier Brice co-hosted a round table discussion at Parliament, along with Walking and Cycling Alliance colleagues. They discussed the Government’s Health Mission & Active travel with Parliamentarians, civil servants and experts including the public health minister Andrew Gwynne MP local transport minister Simon Lightwood, England’s Active Travel Commissioner Chris Boardman, Transport Select Committee Chair Ruth Cadbury and Chief Medical Officer Christopher Whitty. The meeting focused on how can we encourage more people to be active, ease the strain on the NHS, boost productivity, and ultimately create a happier, healthier nation. Together, the Walking and Cycling Alliance makes a powerful coalition of organisations championing the benefits of Active Travel for all. Veronica White, a PHD student, grew up in the Netherlands. After moving to the UK, Veronica was initially daunted by riding on roads in a country where bikes are given far less priority than on Dutch streets. It wasn’t until she found the National Cycle Network that Veronica discovered cycling in the UK can be a joy. Having built up her confidence on the National Cycle Network, she now hopes to inspire others who are hesitant to try cycling to seek out a route near them. Veronica is now planning to ride across the country using the 12,000-mile strong network of interconnected routes as part of her research interviewing female farmers on the future of farming for her geography PhD. She says it has provided with both the means to explore her new home of Devon and also a sense of community. “It’s a Network physically, but also socially to bring people together and really be able to share our experiences. There are definitely times, especially on the cycle paths out to Exmouth and Dawlish, where I just feel like I’m flying. It feels amazing.” As custodians of the National Cycle Network, Sustrans is proud to amplify Veronica’s message and encourage others to set out to explore the accessible paths that are there for everyone to walk, wheel and cycle on. #NationalCycleNetwork #PathsForEveryone #ConnectingCommunites #LittleRedSign
