  • Staff from the Welsh Centre for Burns and Plastic Surgery have been sharing their expertise with professionals from all over the world as it approaches its 30th anniversary. The centre at Morriston Hospital, one of the largest and busiest in Europe, provides specialist care to more than 1,000 people every year, half of whom are children, and treats more than 6,500 people who need plastic surgery, often following trauma, infection and cancer. Its work and reputation saw seven members of the centre being invited to the British Burns Association’s annual conference, which this year twinned with the International Society for Burns Injuries to mark its 20th conference. The group included five medical staff, a therapist and nurse. They gave presentations to attendees after papers they submitted were selected to share with fellow experts. The event also saw advanced clinical nurse specialist Louise Scannell appointed the lead for nurses working in the field of burn care throughout the UK and Ireland. The position is the association’s second lead appointment from Swansea Bay UHB, with advanced practitioner occupational Therapist Janine Evans heading the association’s therapists’ group. Louise said: “My presentation was about how we maintain standards with so few paediatric burns nurses, and how do we continue to recruit, train and develop such specialist nurses. 👉 Read more on our website here: https://lnkd.in/eDyc8cAy #NHS #NHSWales #Healthcare #SwanseaBayUniversityHealthBoard

  • A Swansea mum has become the first person in the UK to receive a new 10-minute injection to help prevent the progression of multiple sclerosis (MS). Emma Cullen previously had to undergo an intravenous (IV) infusion twice a year which would take up to four hours during each visit. But the medication ocrelizumab, which helps to prevent relapses and slow the progression of MS, has now been approved to be given via an under-the-skin injection. MS, which is lifelong, happens when a person’s immune system attacks their brain and spinal cord. The immune system creates cells that attack and kill viruses in the body but for those with MS, the cells attack the nerves instead. Ocrelizumab sticks to one type of the cells, called B cells, and helps to eliminate them to stop them reaching and attacking the brain and spinal cord. The treatment is specifically used for patients with active relapsing MS (where symptoms can flare-up but then go away or get better) or early primary progressive MS (where symptoms slowly get worse over time). Swansea Bay was previously involved in the original clinical trial for the drug and has now administered the first injection at the Jill Rowe Neurology Ambulatory Unit in Morriston Hospital. 👉 Read more on our website here: https://lnkd.in/eWiem4Ci #NHS #NHSWales #Healthcare #SwanseaBayUniversityHealthBoard

  • A 50-year career in healthcare could have been so different for Christine Morrell had it not been for a convenient bus stop and some sound advice from her father. Having started her first NHS role aged 16, she is eligible for retirement but has plenty of things left on her to-do list before calling it a day. Christine is now Swansea Bay’s Executive Director of Therapies and Health Science, with 43 years of her half-century of service coming with what is now Swansea Bay University Health Board and the remaining seven spent working on healthcare-related subjects in Welsh Government. During that time, she has had to adjust to a major new hospital, experience evolving digital developments, the advancement of medicine and a worldwide pandemic. Yet a passion for learning, listening and sharing the knowledge gained in the past five decades means Christine has no plans to call it a day just yet. But her career path could have panned out very differently had it not been for a mixture of chance and some parental guidance. Christine, who grew up in Kenfig Hill, said: “I was 16 and could leave school and my family needed me to earn a wage. “I was advised by my dad to get a job where I could continue education with my employer, but I also needed a job I could get to by bus, and the bus stop was near my house. “It was as simple as that.” 👉 Read more on our website here: https://lnkd.in/eGZS_hX3 #NHS #NHSWales #Healthcare #SwanseaBayUniversityHealthBoard

  • We’ve been working with organisations across NHS Wales to share learning from investigations into healthcare-acquired COVID-19.   The investigations have been essential to provide as many answers as possible to patients, families and carers, in addition to identifying learning opportunities that will enhance future care delivery and experiences of healthcare. The National Nosocomial COVID-19 Programme extends its sincere thanks and gratitude to patients, families, carers and NHS Wales colleagues who have engaged with the review process. • The world’s elite athletes may be going for gold in Paris, but the true Olympic Games values are being played out closer to home, at Swansea’s Cefn Coed Hospital. Patients and staff have teamed up to deliver an Olympics of their own by hosting different events across three wards. There were no gold medals on offer or millions watching on, but the winners were patients from the Celyn, Derwen and Onnen wards within the hospital’s Ysbryd Y Coed unit. They helped staff create flags, torches and flags in the build up to the games, before participating in a range of events that included basketball, static cycling, bowling and even a relay race inside the building. While the fun nature of the home-grown Olympics supported physical fitness, other benefits included promoting teamwork and wellbeing. It’s part of Swansea Bay University Health Board’s Active August initiative, a month dedicated to helping older people move more to boost their overall health and wellbeing. 👉 Read more on our website here: https://lnkd.in/eFMxfT57 #NHS #NHSWales #Healthcare #SwanseaBayUniversityHealthBoard

  • A simple blood test could lead to the earlier detection and treatment of lung cancer thanks to a research study in Swansea Bay. Swansea Bay University Health Board and Swansea University are collaborating on a specific technique which aims to detect the disease more quickly, and prevent patients from undergoing invasive and unpleasant tests. Lung cancer is the third most common cancer in the UK, with more than 43,000 people diagnosed with the condition every year. In the UK, the long-term five-year survival of individuals diagnosed with lung cancer is 14 per cent, but when diagnosed in its early stages (Stage I and II) when the cancer is small and treatable with surgery, that rises to over 65%. The study is being led by Professors Dean Harris and Ira Goldsmith, and governed by the health board’s research and development department with support from research delivery nurses, which are funded by Health and Care Research Wales. More than 60 patients who have had lung nodules detected have volunteered to be part of the research by giving a simple blood test. Those results are now being analysed as part of the study. 👉 Read more on our website here: https://lnkd.in/gq4kQBrw #NHS #NHSWales #Healthcare #SwanseaBayUniversityHealthBoard
