Ian's memory lives on in all we do at Switchee, remembering him today and everyday. 💚
Today marks Ian’s five-year anniversary. I think about him most days, and often wonder how he reached a point where ending it all seemed like the best option. In those dark moments, depression robbed Ian of the truth that he had everything going for him; that he was very bright, accomplished, handsome and much loved. Since his death, I’ve come to see depression as an illness, much like cancer. It helps me to see what happened to Ian, not as a choice he made, but as a tragic fatality resulting from his illness. He lost the battle with depression. Despite this, it is still possibly to help someone you think may be suffering. Professionals recommend asking direct questions about suicide. Asking simple, direct questions can encourage a friend to be honest about how they are feeling. Many people feel relieved and less isolated once they know it’s not a taboo subject. For a great guide on the subject, Google: "Helping someone talk about suicidal feelings - Mind" Even now, five years on, I feel Ian’s presence strongly in our company. The culture, the values, the way we approach things—those are small parts of him that live on, and they remain a part of his legacy.
