We are delighted to announce the completion and unveiling of the East Gate Barrier at the Tower of London! This is a modern and discreet alternative to the previous drop down barrier. We are happy with how well it has been received by the staff at The Tower and Historic Royal Palaces. #heritage #construction #barrier #toweroflondon #london #groundworks

About us
Established in 1759, Sykes & Son Limited is the UK's oldest building contractor. Trading for over 260 years, Sykes has evolved from a small specialist contractor - a glazier, plumber, decorator and small builder – into a medium sized multi-discipline contractor with an annual turnover around £35m. The company has three main workstreams: Building, Mechanical & Electrical and Maintenance. This diversity of self-delivered services allows us to offer a “one stop shop” solution to our clients. Furthermore, we have the flexibility to carry out minor works through to multi-million-pound projects. We are incredibly proud of the part that we have played in restoring, building, refurbishing and maintaining our capital’s heritage over the years. From royal palaces to world renowned museums, galleries and universities, we continue to forge long-term working relationships at London’s finest buildings. Our extensive list of long-term blue-chip clients is testimony to the core values that underpin the business – We Build Relationships; We Bring Expertise; We Are Professional; We Always Care. Whilst our heritage is a source of great pride, Sykes has continued to review working processes to ensure that up-to-date technology and systems are employed across the business. After being based on Essex Street for 261 years, Sykes relocated to a brand-new, purpose-built Bloomsbury office in late-2020. Sykes House provides a vastly improved environment to encourage collaborative working across our workstreams, together with enhanced facilities for meetings, training and staff welfare. Just a mile away, we remain as close to the heart of our operations in central London as our former home on Essex Street.

To cap off #nationalapprenticeshipweek2025 we are happy to look back on previous events we have held to encourage apprenticeships and reskilling opportunities in the industry. #naw2025 #apprenticeships #apprentices #construction #skillsretraining #engineering
Supplier Spotlight series: Apprenticeship Technical Breakfast As we reflect on 2024, we're sharing some impactful initiatives that deserve recognition. In celebration of National Apprenticeship Week, this Supplier Spotlight showcases the Apprenticeship Technical Breakfast hosted by our supplier, Sykes & Son Limited, at the Guildhall. The event featured an insightful talk from Professor Patrick Wallis from the The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). He explored the history of apprenticeships in modern London and reflected on the impact an apprenticeship could have. This talk was followed by Tim Allison from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) of Engineering and Technology. Tim provided an in depth look at the current landscape of apprenticeships and the upskilling involved in engineering and technology. By bringing together key stakeholders and apprentices, the event encouraged valuable discussions on how we can improve and build on creating better access to apprenticeships and reskilling opportunities. “The event provided an opportunity to join up with peers and talk about what more we can do to champion apprenticeships through our public channels”, one attendee said. At the City Corporation we are proud to work with Sykes, who share our commitment for work related opportunities. During #nationalapprenticeshipweek it is also important to reflect on the success of completed apprenticeships and the positive effect it has had on people and the workforce. Chris Foot has been with Sykes for twenty years, having started with us on a work experience placement, before serving a carpentry apprenticeship. Since then, he has continued progressing from being a Carpenter to a Site Supervisor and is now a Contracts Manager. We are proud of Chris’ accomplishments, are thankful for everything he has contributed to Sykes, and as a company we are happy to continue to provide opportunities for people to progress their careers. #naw2025 #apprentices #apprenticeship #building #contractsmanager #construction #carpentry #workexperience

Happy National Apprenticeship week! #NAW2025 🥳 🎉 😃 We have an exciting week ahead celebrating apprenticeships, and we wanted to highlight one of our earliest apprentices Mary Willis, since her birthday is in exactly one week (17/02/1797.) Many may not know that Sykes' founders were the Willis'. It was actually our founder's granddaughter who partnered with John Sykes, for which our company takes its name. As you can see from this 1851 census excerpt, she was a glazier, and would have served an apprenticeship, something rather uncommon for a woman to accomplish in the early 19th century! Apprenticeships and fostering talent has always been a core part of Sykes’ ethos. We look forward to working together with our apprentices in the future! #apprenticeships #apprentice #historical #construction #glazier

We are excited to announce the completion of the Grand Staircase & Entrance Halls' specialist decorating project for The Fishmongers' Company. Together with our in-house specialist and traditional decorators, we worked meticulously with our trusted subcontractors: Coventry Scaffolding, EV Bullen, J.E. Putney & Sons, and SJM French Polishers Ltd. The subcontract teams also included Britain & Co Ltd, Luxury and Heritage Decoration which we would like to give a special thanks to , as well as the Stuc Pierre work of Hare & Humphreys. The project would not have been a success without the close collaboration of Sykes & the Fishmongers Team Justin Birch MRICS for CBRE Project Management, Timothy Dolby (https://lnkd.in/et-GXbQ9), and Bruce Kirk MSLL of CBG Light Perceptions. We think the lighting and finishes to the spaces are exceptional. #heritage #guilding #london #decorating #historical #lighting #construction #finedecorations #interiordesign
