This year we were delighted to be able to extend our summer internship programme! We had an incredible show of interest in the two paid six-week placements rotating through several of our teams. More than 1000 applications were managed by our partner Generation Success, which shows just how important it is for conservation employers to offer entry-level experience to early-career environmentalists. One of our interns, Johnathon Miller-McCall, has been offered an extended role in our Communications team. Here he tells his story about his interest in the natural world and his experience during the internship. https://lnkd.in/eAHAJFFy #Careers #Conservation #Internship [Image description: 'From passion to action: My internship in conservation' with a caption saying 'Johnathon Miller-McCall tells the story of his journey into the conservation world.' with a picture of Johnathon talking into a microphone. ]

“The youth biodiversity movement cannot just run on passion.” With #COP16 underway, youth activists are once again advocating for a safe and sustainable future for people and nature in Cali, Colombia. But, as environmental funders, it is important to remember that their efforts need support as much as any other advocacy work. “If you can see that young people are doing great work, know that this has all been achieved on minimum support," says our Youth Affiliate, Swetha Stotra Bhashyam. "There is so much potential that can only be truly realised if we are funded. Trust that we know how to best spend our money, and then… talk to other funders. You are the ones who can best convince others to start supporting youth work, and that type of support, in the places we can’t reach, is so valuable.” Find out more about the type of funding youth activists are asking for from Swetha, who was the Global South Focal Point for the Global Youth Biodiversity Network (GYBN) from 2018 to 2023. #Biodiversity #Youth #Advocacy

“It was a recurring dream that one day we too would join one of these great gatherings to speak up for nature and biodiversity. "We dreamt of being able to play our part in these vital discussions on the future of our planet, our local communities and our Indigenous Peoples.” These words by our Congo Basin affiliate, Merline Touko, about the IUCN Congress, reflect how important it is for conservationists to be represented on the global stages of events like the Congress and Conferences of the Parties (COPs). The United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity COP16 is happening in Colombia this week, and we are proud to have supported several of our partners to attend. In addition to the other events relating to youth and biocultural diversity we have shared over the past few days, here are some other events our partners are involved in, touching on a wide range of topics: 22 Oct: Women’s Voices on Rights-based Conservation: The Role of Indigenous, Afro-descendant, and Pastoralist Women in Protecting the World’s Biodiversity featuring Rights and Resources Initiative. 23 Oct: The Declaration on the Rights of the Amazon featuring Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature (GARN). 24 Oct: Navigating a Changing World with Human Rights at the Core: Implementing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework with a Human rights-Based Approach featuring ANAPAC RDC and ICCA Consortium. 24 Oct: Youth it or Lose it: Jovenes, saberes, biodiversidad y arraigo en los bosques tropicales del mundo featuring Piatua Resiste. 24 Oct: Bridging tradition and innovation: conservation and restoration Initiatives featuring PROGRES Sulawesi. 25 Oct: The Afro-descendant Peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean as Rightsholders in the Convention on Biological Diversity and COP16 featuring Rights and Resources Initiative. 30 Oct: Biodiversity 2.0: Strengthening Indigenous and Local Community Partnerships to Halt Biodiversity Loss featuring Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA). You can register to watch this free online: https://lnkd.in/eGSNSmHr 31 Oct: Peatland Power: Cultivating Biodiversity, Climate Resilience and Livelihoods featuring Global Environment Centre. #COP16 #Biodiversity #Environment #Conservation

Indigenous Peoples and local communities play a vital role in protecting biodiversity across the globe. It is vital that their voices are heard at events like the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity COP16 and that they are actively involved in decision making around climate and biodiversity strategies. Today marks three weeks since the end of #ClimateWeekNYC 2024, a week filled with ‘this is what we need’ moments and ‘this is how we get there’ ideas. Tomorrow, I leave for #COP16 in Colombia. So, alongside many wonderful Synchronicity Earth team members and partners, here are some thoughts I am travelling with: How do we keep the ball rolling, continue to collaborate, and, in many instances – get out of the way of ourselves – to turn these global meetings and moments into long-term, truly sustainable action that invites transformational change? And, what are the conversations that we have yet to convene, and between who? Three themes stand out for me: 🔆 Reimagining philanthropy  🌱 The appetite to shift how we give is apparent across much of the environmental funder community, but we often get caught up in our own machinations. We could learn a lot from the handful of Next Gen funders I met. “Just Do It” springs to mind.  🌱  We talk a lot about trust – trust-based philanthropy – but we have a hard time letting go of what is no longer serving us, because it is familiar. ‘Letting go’ is a condition we need to get much more comfortable with, across all aspects of society, and regarding our relationship to the natural world, we have to remember who is in charge. 🌏   🌱  Convening is key, and so are shared spaces. Co-hosting the Good Funding Hub with Maliasili and Rights and Resources Initiative was simply smart. So is calling attention to good practice. >> https://lnkd.in/dzQuF3VP 🔆 Climate finance  🌱 There is a major culture clash between ‘nature’ and ‘climate’ – an already false division – playing out in the arena of solutions. This is not new, but it needs addressing, and I believe, it being addressed is possibly more urgent than the urgency it feels to act. We simply need to be very careful that ‘what we fund’ does not do more harm than good. 🔆  Land-based learning  🌱 My week was book-ended by two events centred on listening to Indigenous Peoples share live testimonials about what is happening in their territories, right now. Most of the threats relate to extraction – mining, oil, timber – and some, green energy and bioengineering. Tinkering with Earth’s systems has many unintended consequences; we need to listen to those who have first-hand experience. Dialogue is essential – but not with our comfy cohorts of like-minded folks. Bring on a global diversity of voices – whether more traditional, next-gen philanthropists, or seventh-generationally oriented. I have a sneaky feeling the solutions we are seeking are hiding in plain sight. See you in Colombia! And, please, get in touch if any of this resonates.
