Debit Card Expenditure data from Beauclair Ltd is now in the system and we couldn't help but do some quick analysis! For the year to date spend on Entertainment* (which includes Attractions and Experiences) is 4.5% up on the same period in 2023. However, this is broadly in-line with changes in the Consumer Price Index and so suggests things are fairly stagnant in this area. Visits to Attractions data for the South West shows that visitor numbers are around 4% down for the same period. It’s been a busy first half of the year here at T-Stats. So busy in fact it’s nearly August and I started writing this post at the end of June! Work on the South West Visitor Economy Hub project for Devon and Somerset has been ongoing and hugely insightful, but quietly storming along in the background has been our Visitor Economy Tracking System for Visit Cornwall! Once again using our T-Stats Solutions software, we are providing Visit Cornwall and their engaged businesses with a tool to track and better understand tourism data on the ground, in the destination, in real time. Both attractions and accommodation businesses have embraced the opportunity to share their data in exchange for insight into their sectors, and a robust sample of each is developing. Looking forward to seeing both our systems in the South West continue to grow over the coming months and to see what the data tells us about Summer 2024 performance in these fabulous locations! Tourism boards, both national and regional can play a vital role in supporting their destinations sustainable development. Historically, the traditional role of a tourism board was to market the destination, helping to grow visitor numbers and spending as the main goal. However, with the growing interest and need for the tourism industry to increase its sustainability practices tourism boards must take a more strategic approach. This includes shifting from a streamlined focus on marketing and putting emphasis on research, analysis, development and planning for the destination’s future development.
