T2A campaigns for a criminal justice system that takes into account the distinct needs of young adults 18-25.
About us
Transition to Adulthood (T2A) is a project and campaign of Barrow Cadbury Trust’s (BCT) criminal justice programme. For over ten years, T2A has been making the case for a distinct approach to policy and practice relating to young adults (18-25 year olds) in the criminal justice system. Why is a distinct approach to young adults in the criminal justice system important? Children don’t become mature adults on their eighteenth birthday. Neuroscience tells us that young people continue to develop until their mid-twenties. That’s why T2A thinks the criminal justice system should treat young adults differently from other age groups. Creative approaches to policy and practice will reduce crime, save money, and ensure the best long-term outcomes for young adults. How does T2A work? By collaborating with criminal justice professionals, the T2A Alliance, the voluntary and community sector, policy-makers and young adults themselves, T2A is building up a body of evidence and good practice guidance. The concept of ongoing maturational development is now widely recognised within policy and guidance. So T2A’s current focus is to support criminal justice practitioners to consider the distinct needs of young adults in their work, and to achieve the best outcomes for this group. How can T2A help you? Take a look at the T2A evidence base on our website. It includes all our research and practical guidance on effective interventions for young adults at different stages of the criminal justice system. We’re always keen to signpost practitioners and policy-makers who want to consider the distinct needs of young adults in their work, so do get in touch with us at T2A@barrowcadbury.org.uk if you would like help finding what you need. And if you have any examples of good practice supporting young adults in the criminal justice system, please do share them with us.

The United Kingdom Acquired Brain Injury Forum sent out requests to all police forces in England and Wales in January 2022 asking them about their practice and procedure regarding young adult detainees with acquired brain injury (ABI) in custody. Their findings suggest that there are many young adults with an ABI coming into contact with police custody suites. What's even more worrying is that their condition is often going undetected, and they're not being offered appropriate support. Learn more via their full report here ➡️ https://buff.ly/3SVoiwq
