🐾 Otter Citizen Science Project! 🐾 We’re back in 2025 and delighted to share our recent involvement in the Otter Citizen Science Project! Funded by the Nature Networks Fund via The National Lottery Heritage Fund and expertly led by the Pen Llŷn a’r Sarnau Special Areas of Conservation (SAC), hosted by Gwynedd Council on behalf of the Llywodraeth Cymru / Welsh Government. The initiative is part of the Welsh Partnership of MPAs, a collaboration of five large SACs working together to enhance the entire MPA network through shared expertise and innovative projects. They are also advancing initiatives on water quality, litter, and marine mammal disturbance. The project has been an exciting opportunity to deepen our understanding of otter habitats along Wales’ coastlines and estuaries, particularly in Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). Otters are fascinating creatures that connect land and sea ecosystems. While traditional monitoring has focused on freshwater habitats, this project aimed to uncover the secrets of their coastal journeys. By updating coastal otter data, we can: ✅Inform better management practices for MPAs. ✅Address key challenges like prey quality, contaminants, and habitat resilience. ✅Highlight the critical link between otters and water quality, fostering greater awareness of land-sea connectivity. Training Citizen Scientists At the heart of the work was empowering citizen scientists to play an active role in conservation. TACP (UK) Ltd Ltd has been busy working alongside specialist Lee Jenkins, founder of the South Wales Otter Trust in providing: 🔎Comprehensive Training: Lee has made sure volunteers were equipped with the skills and confidence to analyse otter habitats, whilst recording sightings, spraint and prints. ⚙️Essential Tools: From survey kits to risk assessments, it’s been essential to ensure every volunteer is prepared for fieldwork. 🤝Ongoing Support: Our team Jamie Nicholson-Grime and Zoe Maddocks Dodson have been there at every step, offering guidance, feedback, and resources to help volunteers succeed. These efforts are more than just logistical; they create a knowledgeable and motivated community invested in protecting the natural world. Why It Matters Engaging volunteers doesn’t just provide essential data—it builds stronger connections between communities and nature. Participants develop new skills, contribute to scientific knowledge, and foster a deeper understanding of the delicate balance between land and sea. This collaborative effort will culminate in detailed site reports, offering actionable insights into how we can better support coastal otters and their ecosystems. We’re inspired by the enthusiasm of everyone involved and can’t wait to see the impact of this work. 🦦 #OtterScience #CitizenScience #Sustainability #MarineConservation #WelshEnvironment

🎄 Wrapping Up the Year in Style! 🎄 As 2024 comes to a close, we took some time to celebrate not just the season, but everything our team has accomplished this year. From big wins to overcoming challenges, each of you has played a vital role in making this year a success—and we couldn’t be prouder of all your achievements. Our festive celebrations started with a memorable Christmas dinner at The Botanist in Cardiff, where delicious food and a cozy atmosphere set a wonderful tone for the evening. The fun ramped up at Roxy Lanes, where the team battled it out in bowling, showcased precision on the shuffleboard, and channelled their inner Winter Olympians with an exciting game of curling—a definite personal highlight of the evening! 🥌🎳 The celebrations didn’t stop there! The following week, a few of our team members embraced the season at Cardiff Winter Wonderland, enjoying ice skating in the beautiful setting of Cardiff Castle. It was a magical way to end the year on a high note, even with a few stylish tumbles! Thank you all for your passion and commitment this year—we’re so lucky to have a team like you. 🌿 Attending the CIEEM 2024 Autumn Conference🌿 Last week, members of our team had the pleasure of attending the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) 2024 Autumn Conference in Cardiff, themed Restoring Forwards: Best Practices for Resilient Nature Restoration. This event brought together ecologists, environmental managers, and restoration experts to explore innovative strategies for creating more resilient and biodiverse ecosystems. The conference focused on forward-thinking approaches to restoration that consider not just recovering what has been lost, but building robust systems capable of thriving amidst challenges like climate change and habitat degradation. Key Themes Discussed: ✅ The intersection of ecological restoration and climate adaptation. ✅ Building long-term resilience into restoration projects. ✅ The role of collaborative approaches in delivering successful nature recovery. Our team found the talks inspiring and insightful, with actionable takeaways to incorporate into our own projects. We particularly appreciated the discussions around innovative methodologies and partnerships driving restoration success. Highlights from Jordan Fox, James Bilham: Jordan: “The CIEEM conference was incredibly interesting and insightful. The speakers were informative, and the talks covered a wide range of topics. I particularly enjoyed the workshop on pond restoration. It was fantastic that CIEEM hosted the conference in Cardiff, just a short walk from our offices. “ James: “I very much enjoyed the variety of talks, from developing large scale landscape mapping using remote sensing and AI, to Pond Restoration assisting with increasing biodiversity whilst capturing CO2 and helping with climate change. The remote sensing would assist TACP when conducting large scale habitat mapping as well as providing up to date habitat data for professionals to use on a daily basis, and reducing the need for large scale ground truthing. The talk by University College London on Pond Restoration was an interesting review of how biodiversity can be increased/restored by reinstating lost ponds, whilst helping to manage climate change through CO2 capture, this was particularly relevant with works TACP have undertaken creating a mitigation pond on one of our construction sites. With relevance to legislation, it was great to attend the Net Benefit for Biodiversity Workshop led by AtkinsRéalis, and to further understand the research/discussion being completed by the Working Group to develop a suitable flexible system for use by environmental professionals in Wales, working alongside Biodiversity Net Gain.” We’d like to thank CIEEM for organising such a thought-provoking event and providing a platform for important discussions. TACP (UK) Ltd will be watching these developments with great interest and look forward to further updates and clarity in 2025. #CIEEM2024 #Ecology #BNG #Sustainability #TACP
