Working with Punjabi communities to reshape approaches to mental health 🔆

About us

Taraki works with Punjabi communities to reshape approaches to mental health. The movement was founded in October 2017 by Shuranjeet Singh after his personal experiences with mental health challenges as a student. Shuranjeet felt incredibly lucky as he was supported through his struggles by his friends. However, he observed that many facing mental health challenges within Punjabi communities were unable to access adequate support. Taraki envisions that Punjabi communities perceive and embrace mental health as an integral facet of their lives. We hope that Punjabi communities will engage in conversations, support, and care for their mental well-being at an individual and collective level. We want to see an environment which enables mental health awareness, education, support, and research centred on autonomy and community knowledge, working across intersections of culture, faith, and other markers of identity.

This week has been busy: I've been in Vancouver for the 7th International Association for Youth Mental Health conference where I spoke to advocates, clinicians, researchers and policymakers about my journey and approach with Taraki whilst supporting the work of Wellcome Trust. Then this Saturday I'll be in Surrey, BC, attending one of the spaces for Punjabi men we have helped to start through Taraki's international peer support programme!
