❗️70% of employees want their manager to do more to support mental health. Due to their impact, leaders have a significant responsibility in fostering positive mental health within their teams. Here are 5 key ways leaders can achieve this: 1. Self-Management by Leaders: Leaders should manage their own workload and model healthy work practices to avoid overwhelming themselves or their teams. Delegation and teamwork are essential to maintaining balance. 2. Empathy and Support: Leaders who show empathy, check in with employees, and connect them to mental health resources create a more supportive work environment. This improves employee engagement and retention. 3. Purpose and Connection: Connecting team members to the organisation’s mission and providing clarity on their roles fosters a sense of belonging and reduces feelings of isolation, especially in hybrid work settings. 4. Challenge and Growth: Providing the right level of challenge—neither too much nor too little—keeps employees motivated. Leaders should offer development opportunities tailored to individual aspirations. 5. Autonomy and Flexibility: Empowering employees with choice in how, where, and when they work enhances their well-being and contributes to better retention and innovation. “Mental health challenges often go unnoticed in high-performing teams, where it’s not typically expected or looked out for. These teams can struggle the most, as was evident during the pandemic and its aftermath. The key opportunity here is for teams to encourage one another to take mental health seriously, leading to more open conversations and better support.” Co-founder and team coach, Elaine SEALE-MCKEND shares why mental health in teams matters and the key practices of healthy teams. #mentalhealth #teamcoaching #highperformanceteams

On World Mental Health Day, it's crucial to recognise that mental health isn't something we leave at the door when we start work. Our mental well-being is deeply connected to how we function as individuals, teams, and organisations. Teams aren't separate from mental health—they're impacted by it every day. This day is a great opportunity to break the silence and start the conversation with your team. By openly addressing mental health, we can build trust, foster a supportive environment, and ensure everyone feels safe and valued at work. Let’s use today to begin creating those spaces together. Let’s build better - more healthy - teams. Karen, Kirstie, Kerrin & Elaine #worldmentalhealthday #mentalhealth #workplacewellbeing

Mental health often goes unaddressed in the workplace because many employees feel uncomfortable discussing their challenges. There’s a lingering stigma around mental health, leading people to fear judgment or repercussions if they open up about their struggles. As a result, individuals tend to suffer in silence, which can lead to stress, burnout, and decreased productivity. When team members feel they must hide their vulnerabilities, it prevents authentic connections and trust from forming. For leaders, fostering an environment that normalises mental health conversations and prioritises psychological safety is critical for both individual well-being and the collective health of the team. ❓Is there space for vulnerability in your team?

This month, our focus is on mental health within a team context. The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines mental health as “a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realise their abilities, learn well and work well, and contribute to their community.” In high-performance work environments, our mental health can experience strain, impacting our ability to collaborate, be productive, and bounce back from challenges. In a team, what affects one member, affects everyone. Join us in October as we share insights, advice, and resources for building healthier teams. Q: How does team coaching work? A: Team coaching involves coaches working with an identified team with the aim of aligning purpose, stretching beyond their current performance, and taking positive, powerful actions. This is a very useful intervention not only when teams are struggling or not functioning optimally but is also valuable to set teams up well as they are being formed, or in times of transition. Effective coaching addresses not only the individual but the team, of which they are a part. Sustainable individual change can only be achieved when the teams around the individual also change to support and reinforce new behaviours, priorities and thinking patterns. During the team coaching process, the whole team learns and reflects together, and this helps them to focus their collective energy. Do you have a question about team coaching? Get in touch!
